I was recently given a £5 premium bond bought as a gift by my grandparents when I was born (I'm in my 40s). I went through the hassle of getting it registered online to find that it is now worth.... £5. For the sake of comparison, £5 invested in the FTSE 100 would now be worth £40.60. What might have been..

Big fat zero this month (£33k holding). Shame, as I'd had good run recently, so now about par for the year on 'expected' payouts.

Apologies for any repeat posting, but I noticed the nominal interest rate is reducing to 4.1% today.
I don't really understand what happens when you reach maximum holding if you've opted to use winnings to buy more PBs. Can anyone explain it in simple terms, please?

They'll simply send you winnings instead of adding them to your pot. Direct into your bank account if they have details, otherwise cheque.

Would people recommend Premium bonds as a good, safe way to save/invest?
You’ll get polarised views on this because it so much depends on personal circumstances (like a lot of investments). We’ve got about the expected annual return for the last few years on the max holding - as it’s 100% safe and the income is tax-free, it works for us.

Love it and hate it in equal measure. No volatility and you need a bit of luck. But if you’re after nice little monthly wins with no risk and a tiny chance of winning big it’s just the thing.

I have 11k in PB and 20k elsewhere. I don’t know why I’ve not but the 20k in pb too.
