Used to hate the "have to win every week" pressure of being near the top of the Championship - knowing year after year of £20 million loss was unsustainable.

Let's not go back to that.

Absolutely. Wins in the Championship were like an addict getting a fix: essential, necessary and with only a fleeting high - and a lot of the time there wouldn't even be that as we'd grind out unattractive, ugly, joyless wins against teams we 'expected' to beat. (Gotta get three points, gotta get three points, must get into the PL as we can't sustain these losses indefinitely). In the PL wins are rarer and much sweeter for it.

Basically the only way to enjoy the Championship would be to play in a sustainable way, i.e with a squad the didn't entail dipping into TB's pocket every year, and accept that that meant we'd always be an also-ran club with good and bad seasons. I can't see many of the "I prefer the Championship" people settling for that, given that most fans demand constant progress.

Unfortunately the Premier League was always going to be like this, with the journey and expectation being better than the reality.

Truth is, what is the MOST we can reasonably hope for in the Premier League? To become an Everton? Rarely in any trouble, looking over our shoulder at relegation, safely tucked into mid-table obscurity, with no realistic hope of going any higher. The odd Cup run may come our way, but not much will come of it. If we scrape a Europa League spot somehow, we'll then rest everyone for those games like it's the Carabao Cup, as we need to "concentrate on our League position."

I don't think I'm being overly negative, that's just the reality for a club like ours. Mid-table furniture is the peak we can hope for. "Doing a Leicester" is not impossible, but it's extremely rare, unlike the last time we were in the top flight when the likes of Nottingham Forest, Watford, Southampton could all come through and make genuine pushes to towards top spot. That isn't reality today. You sit in mid-table and that will only go one way without a billionaire owner throwing obscene money around, and even then, a whole lot has to go your way to break through.

There is definitely something "meh" about being in a division we can't win, we can't even get with 6 places of winning in the foreseeable future.

Edited your quote and that could easily be read if we were in the championship.

People assuming we would be up the top and could at some point exit the other way are tripping

Championship means more altered kick off times , more midweek matches, still have international breaks and you can be sure prices won't drop if we go down so the JCL's will as quickly disappear as they appeared back in 16/17. The club will die back in the Championship, a half full AMEX watching the likes of Barnsley, Huddersfield and TINPOT and as we've now tasted the PL dream you can't sell that anymore

Wow!

Have you been taking sensible pills?

I actually agree with all you posted here :wave:

It's only being in mid table somewhere which is dull, though I don't remember the last time that happened to us.

Yup - we've been absolutely spoilt for drama over the past decade or so, when you compare to some perennial midtablers.

Imagine being a Coventry fan in 2016. You hadn't seen your side finish in the top 6 of any division for 45 years.

Rochdale also had a similarly ridiculous stat.

Theres no doubt the demograph of the club has changed amlot in the last 10 years. My happy gauge is callibrated to 1980’s, and I think we’re, on average, over 40 odd years a top half championship side.

The best thing about PL for me is being able to watch all the games even if you cant get there or get a ticket. I’d be more than happy with rocking up and paying on the gate to watch championship football again.

Leeds - but not the dirty bit
Having a successful season in any division is a great experience and fun.

Watching us struggle in the Premier is better than watching us struggle in the Championship, which is better than watching us struggle in League 1...................

Not all, or even many, teams relegated from the Premier enjoy a 'fun season' back in the Championship.

So my vote goes with wanting to stay up even if we survive by the skin of our teeth.

(oh and I get to watch all the games I can't attend too)

From a football perspective, I prefer the Championship...but that may be because we were largely TEARING it up when we were there (bar the Sami period).

From a financial perspective, it has to be the Premier League. We are so fortunate to have TB ploughing in money and we just wouldn't be sustainable now if we went down, so we have little choice but to be here.

I agree.

All these fans who want us to be relegated because it’s better in the championship are talking out of their arses. They are just defeatists who want to meekly accept their fate.

Well I don’t. I want us to win every game and to fight for every point. I want us to compete in the Premier League.

You can bet that had we won against Villa and Bournemouth then the same defeatists would be looking at that gap to Man Utd and asking whether we could bridge it. They would be on NSC talking about this being ‘peak’ Albion and how great it is.

The sad fact is that our club is full of the largest number of moaners and whiners who sit behind their keyboards typing out shite about how the good old days when we were going to Tranmere were so much better. They weren’t! We were going bust, had no stadium and the football was crap.

If those same keyboard moaners could put as much energy into making a noise at the Amex as they do making a noise on here then perhaps we could play our part as 12th man.

Everyone on here - regardless of where they think our league position will be - needs to man up. If you want championship football then you are not an Albion fan. There 42 points to play for and I want them all and I want the Albion in the Premier League. I want us to play Liverpool not Luton!

Peak Albion was when we got promoted. I can’t see how it could improve. We could have another cup run I suppose but that promotion season won’t be beaten IMHO.

Now I WANT us to stay up obviously, but after three years battling to survive in the PL how are we all honestly feeling about a potential relegation?

I know it's a little petty but the thought of watching the Albion again with no VAR is genuinely making me smile a bit inside.

I also wonder how I'll feel about The Championship / football in general now that we have sampled life at the top table. My previous 35 years supporting us have always been about 'getting there'. Having 'got there' will it ever feel the same again?

Hmmm. So much to ponder on a boring Wednesday morning!

:albion2:

It will be nice to have a positive goal to aim for … promotion …. rather than a season after season fight against relegation.

1. I want us to beat the 4 seasons we managed to be in the top flight from 79/80 - 82/83.
2. I want us to finish above Palace in the Prem.
3. I want to see us beat the other big boys - Chelsea, Citeh, Liverpool.

Our work in the Prem is not yet done.

The great things about being in the Championship are:

I can easily get tickets for my family;
We have more chance of winning.

The bad thing is that since bein sports focusses on the premier League I will join the many supporters scratching around for foreign streams

Better we stay up.

I genuinely don’t mind Championship football for us. Some home wins would be a nice start.

In the last 3 seasons, we’ve won at home just 17 times, that’s a win every 1.5 months of a season, scoring just over a goal a game. Aside from relentless PL hype (including Martin Atkinson taking the match ball from the plinth), when it comes it comes to the actual football on our part, it’s all tame and a bit shit isn’t it? Razzamatazz over substance.

To make a real fist of it, you need the player quality and pay structure of a Wolves or Leicester. We don’t.

I feel quite contrary. If someone had said we’d last three seasons when we got promoted I’d have laughed them out of town. The foundations are great. We’re in a great position to yo-yo

If a team go up immediatly after getting relegated it dont really hurt the club much, first year of parachute payments is pretty good. I think IF relegation happens there is a good chance of immediatly bounce back up, the club is a lot more stable and well managed than most clubs that go down.

Absolutely clueless. Stop commentating on something you know nothing about. Financially relegation, even with parachute payments, is a nightmare. Players will need to moved on and match day income will be down significantly. The stats say that teams don’t bounce straight back the next season. Many actually struggle the following season. Ancillary jobs at the club will go, affecting normal people who work at the club.

Please stop acting as if you are a fan of this club. You are in love with the manager and will disappear when he gets the sack!

Although I don’t want us to go, or moreover believe we will. You’ve sold it well old bean, you really have.

Kissing goodbye to dry ice, dwarves on stilts juggling firey torches & super ****ing slow mo and, and VAR! as well as the patronising punditry...

A nice away trip to MASSIVE or a genuinely nice away trip to Preston... winning a few games... having fun, dare I say a laugh ?!?

We can but dream.

Hang on !

I know all these things. Im just saying that its not the end of the world to play in the Championship for one year. Long term its not a big deal. But yes, no relegation is the preferable option.
