[Football] Premier League games this weekend - POSTPONED

The Tour of Britain (cycling) was cancelled last night too - it was due to end on Sunday on the IOW.
Many of the teams are from abroad (& probably dont care that much about whats happened tbh), so spend a LOT of money transporting the riders, equipment, vehicles etc across Europe - and as a week long event, it brings in a lot of trade to various businesses and hotels across the country. We were going to go down to the IOW for the weekend...now we wont be.
Apparently the reason for cancelling it was because of the amount of Police out-riders (which look after the route each day) that now have to head straight to London. To do what I wonder, as the funeral isn't going to be in the next 48hrs is it

I don’t really see what’s stopping these matches being played. The PL is a members club. Just get together and issue an announcement that all games will go ahead as planned.

Well, they did get together, and announced that all games would NOT go ahead.

Just ridiculous isn't it.

I received emails from my kids schools today saying they have held special assemblies to educate, mark the Queen's passing and recognize her contribution. That's great.

Now they've had that, they've got to come home and be told they can't play football and there is no football to watch this weekend, the things they look forward to the most during the week. But all other sports will go ahead as planned including the Great North Run. There is no logic behind this decision at all and unfortunately it has created a lot of resentment I've seen today amongst a lot of people.

I didn't realise they were stopping kids football matches too! Far from a lesson in respect, I'm really angry about this now. This is what the establishment does when it wants to tell the ordinary folk what they should be doing. Golf, rugby, horse racing can all go ahead as planned, but kids can't play football. **** off. Absolute bullshit.

I get that people are annoyed, but thinking selfishly (about BHA) it's bloody helpful. The last thing we need now is a football match when the players are still down in the dumps. Plus, it gives the whole club time and space to focus on the next steps without having to worry about actually playing a match (until October). And another Plus....we will be fourth for the whole of September!

I absolutely agree.

There seems to be a bit of an age split here with younger people viewing this badly.

For me I think it is important that they learn to respect. The Queen dedicated her whole life to service of our country. That is a lesson that is worth learning. To carry on normally does not mark that properly. Kids will remember this, and perhaps learn a bit more about it as a result.

It is the right decision.

And selfishly for us a club a 3 week break couldn't come at a better time.

Horse racing is back on Sunday.

Rugby is back on Saturday.

Decision being made on cricket returning on Saturday.

Do Racing, Rugby and Cricket fans not respect the Queen? Or is it just a much more sensible decision?

How do we know the players are down in the dumps? They may be bloody angry and have a point to prove. I can imagine that Dunk might be spitting feathers! (despite having been a Chelsea fan)

I think you're right about a generational split on this - but in some way the younger ones who are indignabt that football has been called off are partly to blame. The attitude to death has changed, people have become more needy to be seen to mourn, buy vast quantities of flowers and teddy bears to leave on the streets. When the King died, football wasn't cancelled; respects were paid - a minutes silence, and the fans sang 'Abide with me' and the National Anthem (properly!)
Bring on a needier generation and forward to the death of Diana; football was called off then. Was there the same outpouring of outrage about no football then? Not the same amount of social media, so probably not. Nonetheless, because of publc pressure, a lot of things happened when Diana died. This weekend's cancellation are a legacy of that.
Besides, fans these days probably don't know the words to the National Anthem, let alone 'Abide with me'! - and would probably have to have a minutes applause because a few low-lifes would respect a minute's silence either.

Who are the younger ones? If it's people who were upset about Diana they'd be in their 40-50s now. Also game on the day she died was called off, but there was league games that week.

Possibly, but I've heard (a bit third hand, admittedly) that they were gutted at Lancing yesterday.

Exactly this. It could cut either way. The players could be down because we lost Potter (and the rest), or they could be angry and fired up, determined to prove a point.

If only we had somebody with an advanced degree in Emotional Intelligence to help them unpack all of this...?

Well, I’m certainly not cancelling the walking football session I organise on Saturday mornings, but Cornwall FA have cancelled ALL Football down here, including Sunday’s Walking Football league games!
