The last time an English monarch died was 6 Feb 1952. There were apparently league football on 6th and 7th and the two Saturdays following

Operation London Bridge, the official document now being adhered to was first written in the early 1960's.

Right thing IMO.

One weeks inconvenience vs 70 years of service, as a mark of respect.

Not too much to ask for…..

Won’t do anyone any harm.

But your post was"don't you know what happened last time a monarch died ?"and the answer appears to be Football continued.

It doesn't appear to be stipulated in the plan as it's up to each sports body but if it was why not announce last night?

Well it will cause football supporters to lose money while cricket and rugby supporters won't. Why? And small traders already hit by the forced health restrictions of Covid now will lose a lot of money on cancelled events. It's unnecessary as we are being dictated to about how we should behave, and in a free country that's wrong

Won't someone think of the geezers flogging the half and half scarves. Any dates on them and they'll have to bin the lot.

What about everything else Teddy? You might not be able to watch Brighton tomorrow, or even a kid on Sunday morning, but you can go watch a Cricket Test match, a game of rudgy, or a horse race on Sunday if you want....

It should all be cancelled, as a mark of respect.

I’m just pleased the national sport has taken the right decision

Edit - I had Bournemouth tickets and have lost money on a car space, but that is minor in the s heme of things.

Think you have missed the point somewhat!

What is the point then?

The monarch of 70 years has sadly died, football has IMO, made the right decision for this weekend. Other sports haven’t, shame on their governing bodies.

Sunday football doesn’t go ahead, this is one weekend….

I think a coming together of people is a mark of respect and shared empathy. Think of the Amex after the Shoreham Air Crash. Stadiums all full of people all falling silent across the country would be a sight broadcast around the world, with stadium screens showing memories of the monarch. Cancelling football but most other stuff cracks on just seems an empty gesture. I don't see how not going to a game of football or not playing in one is a mark of respect? Odd concept for me. Still, perhaps I'll see if there are any tickets for the Oval Saturday or Sunday - every cloud.

Sorry Bold, I disagree, the magnitude of this event historically, probably outweighs the vast majority of events in our lifetime. I would still hope there is a minutes silence next weekend as well

Cricket has got it wrong.

Cricket hasn't got it wrong, it's got it very much right. Our U12s final is on on Sunday and the 2nds who could get promoted tonorrow weather permitting both games that are now or never due to the time of year. Unlike football who have cancelled grass routes football this week across the board penalising age ranges who have missed a huge amount of games and sport due to covid. Shame on them.

Sorry but that’s just tough luck.

(Hope you win the games)

They really have got it wrong though, but appreciate we have different opinions.

Agree to differ and all that and thanks for the best wishes for the cricket. I just find the football incredibly frustrating. Its a complete ball ache organising pitches (they needed painting) , referees, parents who cant find their arse with both hands and fixing a set of goals where the wheels had broke. This then gets cancelled due to something completely unrelated. On the bright side, it means the kids can have an extra cricket net.

From ParkRunUK:
"It was with great sadness that we heard, yesterday evening, that Her Majesty The Queen had passed away. Around the world there are parkrun communities that will be in mourning, and many will be looking to pay their respects.
As local communities, where people come together to be active, outdoors, and social, we believe that parkrun events can play an important role in helping us get through challenging times, and as such we look to keep them open wherever possible.
As things stand, therefore, we will not be asking any 5k or junior parkrun events to cancel this weekend. However, each individual parkrun event should feel comfortable paying their respects in the way they see fit."

From England Rugby:
"Rugby, at its heart, is about community and bringing people together, in good times and in sad. Rugby clubs are a source of strength and support during times of uncertainty, and we hope that by enabling games and other rugby activity to go ahead this weekend, with families and friends congregating it will help us all to unite at this time of national mourning."

Entirely sensible. So why is football any different, especially at grassroots level?

I think you're right about a generational split on this - but in some way the younger ones who are indignant that football has been called off are partly to blame. The attitude to death has changed, people have become more needy to be seen to mourn, buy vast quantities of flowers and teddy bears to leave on the streets. When the King died, football wasn't cancelled; respects were paid - a minutes silence, and the fans sang 'Abide with me' and the National Anthem (properly!)
Bring on a needier generation and forward to the death of Diana; football was called off then. Was there the same outpouring of outrage about no football then? Not the same amount of social media, so probably not. Nonetheless, because of publc pressure, a lot of things happened when Diana died. This weekend's cancellations are a legacy of that.
Besides, fans these days probably don't know the words to the National Anthem, let alone 'Abide with me'! - and would probably have to have a minutes applause because a few low-lifes wouldn't respect a minute's silence either.

Why a. obsession with young people, maybe they don’t identify with the Queen. I respect what she’s done, like I respected Le Bron James or Sean Lock for example. It seems forced and performative, rather than actually having any meaning. I will definitely be sad she has died, but I do not care if other people are unbothered.

I assume you've emailed Bozza and asked him to close NSC as a mark of respect too?
