The problem is the definition of 'Clear and obvious'. Dermot Gallgher on Sky Sports News has repeatedly regurgitated the official line, which is just wrong.
"If the player is a millimetre offside, then clearly and obviously it is offside".
Bollocks! A millimetre (or even an inch or two) is not 'clear and obvious' enough to start looking at it in minute detail! It should be 'referee's call'.What is clear and obvious is where half (or more) of the people in the stand have seen that the ref. has made a complete ricket! A time limit for a VAR decision would be an improvement; maybe only real time replays too, no frame-by-frame slow motion stuff (a ten or fifteen second time limit for the VAR to make his call would help with that).

We don't want millions of pounds of technology and teams of VAR officials playing silly buggers looking to see if an offside decision was a millimetre the other way fro how the ref. saw it, or whether the ball might have inadvertently brushed the hand of someone who couldn't realistically get out of the way. If that's the sort of precision you want from football go and watch snooker.

For offside, VAR is attaching a level of precision that real time doesn’t support. The ‘line’ they use needs to be a certain thickness......allowing for the time the ball in in contact with the passer’s foot, the speed of the attacker etc

This has been going on for many seasons now, even old school ex player pundits have largely joined the bandwagon with bullshite on barely a touch with “Well, there was contact”, “the defender didn’t need to make that tackle”, “I can see why it was given”.

Brushing over an attacking only looking to hit the deck, sometimes well on their way before they touch the defender.

The last pundits who stood their ground on this were Collymore on TS and Sutton on R5. With “I’m sorry, a strong athlete with balance, doesn’t go down”.

The scourge of modern football along with awful referees and awful VAR analysts.

I’ve been saying this ever since VAR was introduced - the ‘thin’ lines are a joke. Too much precision.

In other news, if VVD has ‘done his ACL’ and is ‘out for the season’ (as I’ve seen posted) then he really did amazingly well to walk around the pitch afterwards. Still a shocking challenge from Pickford though - without the offside he should might have been off.

Totally agree. Yes, there were controversial decisions and mistakes made by refs in the past but by and large we accepted them during the game, then often had a moan either in the pub that night with our mates or the next morning after seeing the highlights on MOTD.

I would far prefer for the refs to make a few mistakes and let the game flow and accept their decisions as ironically I would say there are now more controversies being highlighted because of VAR. Don't try to fix something that wasn't broken. The tech for VAR could have been used 10 to 15 years ago but we weren't all clamouring for it then. Why now?

For me VAR just creates more controversies than it's worth, yes in part down to the interpretation of the constantly changing rules, but delays the game, ruins the spontaneity of celebrating a goal (will it stand or won't it - come back in 2 mins and we'll let you know) and could lead to further micro managing of every aspect of the game that we all love in the future.

Do people really want every minutiae of every aspect of the game monitored in this way? That's why I still love watching county league football when the Albion aren't playing as the game just seems far simpler, and ultimately for me anyway, more enjoyable.
