What is any player supposed to do now? If you feel the ball brush your arm in a challenge, before it breaks for you and you go on the attack, you might as well just boot the ball away because you know any goal resulting will be chalked off. Stupid.

If his arm isn't there, what happens? I only caught a glance at the replay, but it looked like if it doesn't hit Rice's arm it goes away from him and he doesn't get possession. Surely if he has benefited from the handball, it's not really an injustice?

Exactly this

Any other year and that ends with a draw. Harsh on Sheffield but that's football. Football is going to die if this goes on.

I saw it as ball hitting his arm, not an intentional attempt to gain an advantage. I feel sorry for West Ham, I feel sorry for football.

The Sheff Utd player headed the ball into Rice's arm from 18 inches away. Rice knew nothing about it., could do nothing about it.

Isn't handball supposed to be intentional? I know they've changed it for the purposes of VAR in the last year, but for the previous 100 years haven't we all been satisfied that handball has to be intentional to be penalised?

You (and a load of people in the thread) are conflating two different issues.

The new handball rule (in the event of a goal being scored) is absolutely black and white - if it touches an arm in the immediate build up, it’s handball. No ‘intent’. No ‘natural silhouette’, etc. Contact = handball.

Nothing to do with VAR at all - except that in this particular case, it took a VAR replay to spot the contact.

This thread just proves VAR doesn’t solve everything. It’s down to interpretation and therefore I’m starting to think just leave it with the ref. I’ve not even seen the incident but just from this thread can tell it wasn’t ‘clear and obvious’ so why are we letting VAR and one blokes subjective view ruin our game. They need to change it drastically.

Rice currently being interviewed on Sky and looks like he is going to cry while talking about it.

You’re saying the new rule is simply ‘if it hits an a it’s handball’? If that’s the case refs and VAR haven’t been following the rules this season. There’s been lots of talk of ‘unnatural positions’ all season. So what’s correct?!

No, I don't think we are. The rule only got changed BECAUSE of VAR - to try and make it easier for VAR to judge on handballs. But then we get a goal like that, that was perfectly legal for over 100 years - so it is an example of how VAR is spoiling the game

Incorrect. See the post above yours.

I’m confused. It’s a different rule for if a goal is scored to a normal handball? So a penalty handball is a different rule to a disallowed goal handball?! Wtf?

You’ll change your mind when you’ve seen it.

‘Clear and obvious’ is not relevant in this case at all. It’s an absolutely black and white rule. It’s really not down to interpretation nor is it subjective.

The ball hits your arm in scoring or setting up a goal = handball.

There’s literally no confusion whatsoever (apart from people who have not kept up with the rules).

As Rice pointed out in his interview, the Sheffield fans were cheering that VAR decision as if it was a goal. That is what football has come too, cheering a VAR decision rather than cheering a goal. I know its not what I go to games for.
