I wonder who we'll get at the beggining of next season.

Ive just been into town, and whilst walking past London Road i noticed Peterborough have thier pre-season fixtures out already.

Man Utd
Celtic
Nottingham Forset
Birmingham City
A couple of other BIG names ive forgotten.

So a SHIT team,in a shit area in a leauge more shitter than ours can attract teams of this calibre.
Makes me wonder who we'll get.

Worthing?
Lewes?
Crawley?
Whitehawk?
Selsey?
Bognor?
Maybe even some big names like aldershot or Gravesend n Northfleet!

Playing snooker
And Alex Ferguson's son, Darren, is their manager, which may have helped faciliate the game against a Man Utd XI.

We do seem to have the least glamorous pre-season fixtures of any club in the world. Any particular reason for this?

Not that I'm knocking a sun-drenched afternoon at Bognor or Worthing, can be very pleasant indeed after a couple of ales, watching which triallist we don't sign and let go to Millwall/Rotherham/Carshalton.

We're probably not allowed friendlies at Withdean. Think we had Leicester and Forest a few years back (woo hoo), but I suppose it is a bit MUCH to ask, being as we have to tiptoe round every fucker in Sussex just to get a game on.

By playing Worthing, Lewes and Crawley every year, we have absolutely no idea how any of our triallists, new signings etc. are going to perform in the League. The Albion seem to use pre-season friendlies as a glorified form of pre-season training. Then they get caught out be giving the likes of Molango multi-season deals. Seem to recall Robbie Pethick was top goal-scorer in the pre-season friendlies by a country mile one year

Dare I say it half the reason for a poorish start to the season is the fact the pre season is gash?

It wasn't a bad start to the season. We won two, should have been the first three and took the game to Notts Forest. I thought the whole point of the preseason friendlies were training matches. Get into the groove. Obviously we need better opposition if we have trialists though.

The level dropped after thos few games, players (somehow) looked tired.

Brentford at home was woeful for example - they had 10 and should have won.

I agree about the trialists, would Mehta have got a contract if had been seen against a decent side?

My suggestion would be a week in Scotland playing Fri/Sat Wed then again Saturday. I am sure that we could find a div 3 side to score goals against and a div 1 or 2 or even lower premier to test us out.

I could take my old campervan up then.

The Worthing game is part of the agreement for the reserves playing there I think.

Previously home friendlies have been very rare as the seats have been away watching golf for the summer :D and didn't come back until just before the season started. Now we have purchased the seats, there is less of an excuse for not having home friendlies. However, they are still likely to be rare given the costs of putting on a game at Withdean.

I remember watching the Albion play Lewes a couple of years ago and Turienzo was on trial. I thought he was the biggest pile of shite I had ever seen, next thing I know we've paid six figures for him. So playing friendlies against 'cheap' opposition isn't always cost effective.
