It wasn't a bad start to the season. We won two, should have been the first three and took the game to Notts Forest. I thought the whole point of the preseason friendlies were training matches. Get into the groove. Obviously we need better opposition if we have trialists though.

shh - you cant bring up the good start we had under mcghee

:D Without wishing to open a can of worms. I would have been happy to have McGhee keep the reins for the season and Wilkins getting more experience with the first team, but it wasn't to be  )

One of the greatest positives of our pre-season is that it puts some much needed money into the coffers of the local teams that we rely upon to 'blood' our youngsters. It is good for Sussex football - So that is one positive.

Beats me why a prem team doesn't want to bring a squad down fro a few days in town at the height of the summer I remember Liverpool did it in 1985 and I believe they asked us for a game, if there is a ruling that excludes us playing home games in July, then play it first few day so of August, although season bound to start early next time as euro championship.........mmm maybe not for us.

Last couple of years we have played tems like Colchester, Southend and Oxford. Wouldn't suprise me if we played Daggenham away

Why not approach Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth to hold a mini south coast tournament. Whilst they would be friendlys they would also be competitive and add to the gate.

I remember watching the Albion play Lewes a couple of years ago and Turienzo was on trial. I thought he was the biggest pile of shite I had ever seen, next thing I know we've paid six figures for him. So playing friendlies against 'cheap' opposition isn't always cost effective.

I agree with that.

Would be hard to arrange shittier pre-season friendlies than we've had recently, but Reading game apart I'm sure the club won't let us down by arranging any attractive ones this year either. :)

Le Havre away is a good'un... they only chance we'll get to play in Europe for a good few decades anyway.

I agree the players need a challenge though, friendly or not... imagine how morale boosting a goal against AC Milan or Celtic would be... I realise the Sussex derbies are a big draw for the non leaguers involved but surely we could get ONE big name in.

This sounds like a really good idea! The only issue is that the unwritten rule is that you don't have friendlies against teams in the same division - so B'muff might be a problem.

My best memory of pre-season is in a 4 club tournament in Eindhoven in 1982 with PSV, Ipswich and some Belgian team (Lokeren?). Tied it in with inter-railing as a student. Anyone else make it there - there were a couple of hundred of us?

PG.

I was there and on the ferry on the way home I chatted to Sir Bobby Robson and passed on some of my knowledge to him

Would not mind doing Bognor or Hastings, plus quite possibly Eastbourne Town if they get out of the County League some Sussex major non league grounds i have not done yet (Doing Boroughs in May when Brighton res play cup final there).

Don't think the old bill would enjoy so many rival fans at a tournament???

Or approach Merdian TV for them to run and televise a tournament for all the teams in their tv area. So we add Gillingham Southend and Reading
