the bad person in me thinks it is a media ploy- the girl could well be safe, and the family are just bigging up the cause, to generate donations -to a fighting fund, for lawyers fees (now why would they need a lawyer..?), or for an exclusive OK magazine deal..

You are a genius. I think you have cracked it. of course that is what is happening. I am so blind to these things.

ARE YOU MAD?

Came through passport control at Heathrow last night and they had posters of Maddie at every desk. Whilst this is obviously a good thing, what about all the other missing kids in Europe? Why is Maddie more important than them? I don't understand why she has been singled out for so much attention. Is it because she is white, bolonde and cute?

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I am not quite as bad as Desperate Seagull, but when i see a young, white girl dominate the front pages and tv screenings, i generally think i how i oughtn't join in with this emotive stroytelling. I don't for a minute doubt the theft of her, but i can't bring myself to see it as a main worry on the planet for me to concern myself with, or pray at night over, considering my atheism and disbelief in the arrogant involvement religion might deliver in these situations.
Lots of people, it seems, get mostly moved by pretty young ones missing, whose pictures get lodged in their minds repesenting loss and mourning for all life's situations, a thousand worst fears.

I just turn over when the story comes on, and wonder how many missing infants are invisible and anonymous. What makes them less of a media catch, less worthy of discussion, and how long this tale will hold the importance to last.

That's just miserable me. It can be suitably important to others if they wish.

That is the best post you have ever written - i completely agree.

I am an Atheist, and when I saw people die on my last placement - it made me believe more heavily that if there were a God, there is no way that it'd let people go through what happened to them.

If praying is helping them, then that's ok - but I believe that actually searching for her would be more beneficial.

If the family take strength from their beliefs then who are we to criticise. Just thank yourself lucky that you are not in that situation or any other situation where you may feel the need to pray.

To be honest the situation seems to be getting more and more hopeless by the day. Within a few weeks the police will be winding there investigation down and the media will have moved on. It will just be another missing person. This of course is what those bastards that have taken her want.

I've read somewhere that a fund is to be set up, not for lawyers (there no use unless someone is caught), but for private detectives to hunt and search for her, for as long as it takes. Maybe, just maybe if the bastards knew that they would never be able to rest, then they may free her. I for one would donate to something like that.

In the meantime, I will continue to pray for her safe return

Lots of thoughtful answers here.
But none to the central question: What kind of 'God' is it that might only help a defenceless child if enough people pray for it?

I honestly think praying is more to satisfy the individual that they aren't helpless rather than them thinking "if enough people pray then maybe god will bring her back". I dont believe in God myself but thats the impression I get.

Its all the same as football innit... :jester:

- We go to a place to worship every saturday at 3pm
- We try and convert others to what we believe in and tell them how good it is
- We sing songs to praise those infront of us
- We have a leader which we all wish things from to make our dreams come true
- We establish friendships and communities through it
- Matchday programme = Bible
- What ever little things/rituals/superstitions we have and do, we think it will change what happens on matchdays, but we all know it has no bearing on it whatsoever

:jester:

You've missed out the magic wine on matchdays

One would have to consider whether God is omniscient and omnipotent. Isn't he meant to be?

To answer your question - a very poor 'God'.
