Poyet's failure to sign a target man is a farce

I have absolutely no doubt we could have kept him if Gus had wanted to. No proof just reading between the lines at the time, I never got the impression that Gus was a big Murray fan. Maybe he had a bit of attitude and Gus doesn't tolerate players with attitude it seems

There is only room for one big ego at the club.

We had what we need: Glenn Murray.

Glenn Murray

I nearly mentioned him last night, as he would have been good to have around still, but hindsight is a wonderful thing & Gus must have thought he could do much better, so in this example there an element of farce, although that's not really the word I'd use.

I'm neither Gus, nor a scout, so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to estimate both what our wage budget is and the 'checks' that Gus likes to run on potential signings. When they start paying me to do it though, I'll be sure to find someone  Until then, I will simply be a supporter and point out that we need a target man.

I agree a target man type player is needed, but very few / non of the fans know what goes on behind the scenes, we could have been close to signing a very good target* on more than one occasion since Murray left, but for one reason or another missed out. Which would Make it far from farce like, more unfortunate.

Or we could have been recommended a "next Drogba" type player, but he could have come with a Leon Knight type reputation which would then upset a happy dressing room.

*Although why we took Billy Paynter on loan when no one had a good thing to say about him is a bit of a mystery.

9 men out there tonight. Barnes completely anonymous and Dobbie making Billy Paynter look mobile. Presumably he was our 16th choice striker in the summer and we ended up with him?

It's embarrassing that we still haven't replaced Murray and infuriating that, just like last season, a few games in and teams have worked out that we've got no plan b. We've made some brilliant signings, but Poyet's failure to get the striker (again!) is going to cost us.

Let's hope CMS gets fit soon and Dobbie can sit his fat arse back on the subs bench!

We need adequate back up / partner for CMS. Dobbie may or may not be this, no-one knows because he has had all of TWO games after a lack of first team football. That he is not yet up to CMS's level of fitness is inevitable. It was the same with the only target man we HAVE been linked with, Bothroyd, who looked a disinterested lump for Sheffield Weds. However, we'll only know if we dodged a bullet later on in the season. New or loan signings inevitably take time to bed in to a system and get up to full effectiveness.

Let's say you'd been unemployed for 6 months. You then get a new job doing what you were before but with different people and systems. Would it be fair to expect you to be perfect after 2 days?

Gus is clear we need a new striker but that it has to be the right player at the right price. This is not farce. What would be a farce would be if we signed the wrong player for too much money and ended up where Pompey are in a few years.

Oh, and against Birmingham an 8ft 9 Brazillian with a 40 goals a season record wouldn't have got a sniff because our winger's delivery was so poor - straight to the keeper every time.

All we need is some big f***ing lump for plan B! Is it so hard to see for gus? We just need some muscle for when teams sit back and drop deep so that when we whip a few crosses in, their defenders shit their pants for once!

We had it when we won league 1... AND he could win penalties for fun.... AND he had good feet for a big guy...

What a brilliant in-depth analysis of the current squad, championship and matches together with a superb tactical plan ensuring every player is completely briefed on their role.

Can you do the credit crunch and recession now please ?

Yes, Poyet's single-mindedness and way of doing things got us the League One title in his first full season, and our highest place position in the football league for over 20 years the following.

And we are 3rd now. Can I just exactly what it is you think he should be delivering, because we haven't heard that yet?

:lolol: brilliant post.

Can you imagine TCB and Withdean Wanderer on a night out? They'd deliberately buy a train ticket but pick a night when there's engineering works just so they could slag off the replacement bus service. Said bus journey would be spent ruling out every pub in Brighton as a venue 'because they are shit'. They'd finally arrive in the one pub left with 5 minutes to chucking out time and spend 4 of those minutes dismissing the beer selection as inadequate before putting on a nice bit of Gary Barlow and moaning about the weather.

We don't need a big lump!!

I really want to clear up this confusion. Read Husty's posts further down as he seems to understand the difference.

Murray was able to do the job of lone striker because he is a class player, it's nothing to do with his size, although he wasn't small he wasn't a lump either.
Being big and strong doesn't make you a good player, look at billy paynter - he was a big man up front and contributed the sum total of f*** all, crap in the air, crap on the ground, crap in front of goal, spends most of the time in the wrong position, ran like a sloth on valium.

If you can do all the things I've just mentioned then you've got the job regardless of how big you are. Don't get me wrong, I know being big helps but it's at the bottom of the list. The best example of this is Drogba, built like a brick shithouse and one of the best in the world at leading the line but he needed all the other attributes for it to work, otherwise he would've just been a big bloke and you can find loads of them at the gym!

The issue would appear to be either the transfer fee or the wages that were being asked that have limited our ability to sign the striker we need. This could run into the next close season before this is rectified. Maybe Toby should be given some time to show what he can do as he has looked good when he has come on before

In hindsight letting Murray slip through our fingers was a mistake. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

Not hindsight at all - it was bleedin' obvious at the time, as many of us said.

Remind me where we are in the league? With about the 12th biggest budget in the league? We are overachieving, Gus is doing a superb job. Get a f**king grip.

He's made himself look really, really, really stupid a number of times with this policy of judging players/managers WAY too early. I suspect he may do the same with Dobbie, who is clearly a very, very talented player.

Some serious morons on here, 2 games into his new club career and dobbie's a shit player, Poyet is a farce and all the fans generally complain. FFS we have had 2 bad games, I absolutely agree with that but the over reaction from our fans is unbelievable, it sorts the true fans from the not so true, just like the idiots at the AMEX yesterday who instead of getting behind the team and singing when we're behind get on the team and individual players backs! If we were bottom of the league no win in 8 I could possibly understand a thread like this, but we are not WE ARE THIRD, look at how much the teams around us have spent compared to us, we have had 2 bad games, onwards and upwards to Derby. & may I just say what a surprise it is to see the same old suspects come out the woodwork, seem to post more on here when we play poorly.

Dobbie making Billy Paynter look mobile.

I stopped reading here. Dobbie's movement against Birmingham was excellent. Some excellent jinking runs into the box and one of the only ones willing to take a pop from distance when it was clear we were stuggling to break Ipswich down.

It actually scares me that some people genuinly dont understand football.

There is some truth in what the OP is saying, but it is just said in such a poor way. What we need, in Gus' very own words, is a "striker with presence". Dobbie needs time on the pitch, and I'm sure he will improve, but he is not, and never will be, a striker with presence. Murray is exactly the TYPE of player we need. I said at the time it was a mistake to let him go. We have failed to replace him with someone better, and that IS a failure, but I am sure we will get a suitable player in. We are just so close to being a great Championship team and club.
