We just need to win a scrappy game and then things will improve ... teams have worked out a way to stop us playing we now need to step up a bit more

Some numpties in the team last night put in place this mythical Plan B - hoofball

I wasn't there so don't know but who were these "numpties"? I'd be interested to know.

Also wouldn't it be better to have a chat with them rather than lambasting the entire team in the media?

observation number 1 : The players are not skilled enough to play tippy tappy in the Championship as the opposition can stifle out this game plan because Swansea got away with it last season.
observation number 2 : The players are not skilled enough to play hoofball in the Championship but could get away with it in League 1.
observation number 3 : Gus has another 12 games to turn things around , TB is not the type of guy to get f***ed about.

Main culprits - Harper, Greer, Calderon.

Of course, they're not normally numpty (but that I mean unthinking) players - it's just what they did was indicative of numpty football. 'Great - we've got a big player upfront, let's lump it up to him...'

If I were one of the other 8/9 players I'd be a bit miffed. Also Greer and Cald have come in for quite a bit of praise (on here) so far this season .. perhaps they are getting frustrated. Also makes me think about the rumoured "spats" with Cald and now Dunk .. there may be nothing in that but I've managed people who have managed teams and if there's player frustration leading top fall outs and now (seemingly) ignoring instruction then that can be the early stages of disintegration

Our biggest problem is actually Painter.

Fullbacks are so crucial to how we play and we have a left back who, through no fault of his own, isn't a skilled enough ball player. Add to that we werent playing with a left winger in front of him for 30 mins of the 2nd half and that basically made one side of the team impotent and every time he overlaps the attack fizzles out.

Painter is excellent defensively. It may be worth shifting him to CB and Calderon (who I thought was actually very good lst night) to LB.

In top level football, so much emphasis is placed on the quality of the full backs as they see as much of the ball as anyone else on the field. I love Painter and last year he was outstanding for us; unfortunately he is not the left back we need to really push on this year.

Gus' style of management is totally based on him being in control. Always has been. Whilst he should obviously have taken some reposnsibility for what sounded like a crap performance last night, the players also need to take some of the blame. People forget that Gus has never managed at this level and I think it's very brave of him to stick to his principles even in this barren run. I wonder what anyone outside of Brighton thinks of the fact that we are actually criticising him and getting frustrated with him. Whilst the recent run/performances have been disappointing, he is the best thing that has happened to our football club in my years of watching. On this occasion (and on others in the past) he has let his passionate side get the better of him. He is not bloody perfect. But for Brighton, he is about as close to that as we are going to get.

The only team who worked us out last year and punished us was Stoke city who as soon as we started passing it around at the back, jumped on us and and that was that. I seem to recall yeovill trying the same but didn't have the finishing to really push us.

This division we are playing against these pseudo premiership sides who have seen arsenal and the like knocking it about and have worked a way of trying to stifle it, like Blackpool for example.

I think that we haven't suddenly become shite, however I do think that when put under pressure we tend to have no one who will step up and take the game in midfield...birdcutt aside. Certainly our plan b of hoof ball is never going to work against teams like Watford who are far better at it ( and actually I thought their centre back had painter in his pocket all night)

I disagree. They ARE skilled enough. But when they lack confidence they don't do what they did last season. The one touch quick passes aren't there for fear of playing it astray. You saw how we played earlier in the season. It's not about us being found out in my opinion. It's about the players not putting into practice what they are capable of doing.

They need to play as if they believe in themselves a bit more and take more risks. So many at the moment are hiding. Playing the easy ball just for the sake of it. You watch, if we score first against Barnsley, we'll tear them apart..

He is a clever manager ........

His quotes weren't really aimed at his players re: them implementing their own version of how to play, ahead of the managers version.

It was to us the fans to focus our minds that for now we will at times lose games no matter which version of football we play and his comments were to those that have advised a longer ball tac tic ahead of his unstinting belief for his passing game.

He is saying 'see we tried it last night and it failed and we lost, so now let me get on with it, thank you'

It was good PR.

We don't seem to have learnt from our last 2 ventures into the Championship , its not all about silky skill and neat footwork that is needed to survive or progress , there has to be a combination of rough-tough football mixed in to the precision passing to beat sides that play like that every week.

Well, I expected the usual doom merchants on here today but I wasn't quite ready for some of these digs at Gus. Quite sickening really. Are some of you actually questioning his ability as a manager and coach? Really?

I don’t think anyone is questioning his ability as a coach, I think the questions are more about his character. I have really enjoyed watching the way he has changed the side into a genuine footballing side and storming Div 1 last year, no doubt the guy can clearly coach. What is reasonable to question is his character when under pressure. You always find out the true nature of someone when things are going badly, not when they are going well. It’s easy to be good when things are good, it’s being good when things are bad that sorts out the stars from the would-be’s. I really hope it’s a blip and he does sort it out and soon. But as a lot of people have said here the ‘I’ll go home’ thing is ridiculous, divisive and makes him sound pretty pathetic really. I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt with translation etc but unless he can show that he is able to be good when its not going his way I imagine that people will start to say ‘go on then’ if he keeps going with his ‘I’ll go home’ threat.

The difference between League 1 and the Championship is that the passes have to be precise and accurate , we got away with it last season because the opposition didn't have the pace to break us down , now they are equal or better than us in negating our style of play.

His style of play does work - but only when executed properly, and, as he puts it, it is 'high risk'. Some numpties in the team last night put in place this mythical Plan B - hoofball - as called for by some on here, and it was of course f***ing shit. Did Gus tell them to do that? Evidently not, but they still did it. Those are the sorts of things (players doing as they are told) Gus has to sort out.

His' 'I'll go home' comment was a public admonishment of his players, NOT a threat or statement of intent. He has a fine mind for colourful language, and for so many people to take him at his literal word is a bit on the facepalm spectrum.
Agree his style of play does work, sadly opposition have worked out how to play against it. As I stated Palace defended higher and pressed the ball we run out of ideas, West Ham just put eleven bodies behind the ball and almost let us play across the back and midfield, great to watch us pass it about but West Ham pressed the ball when we finally looked like making a positive pass and stopped us from playing.
These are Gus's players and should be able to properly execute his style, he bought them and they have not all come cheap.
I think Gus is a good manager but now is the time for him to prove his worth of a 5 year contract and turn it round, it was only 6 weeks ago we where all crowing about top 6 finish that can still happen with hard work on and off the pitch.

Seem to recall Carlisle making an excellent job of it at Withdean.
