Interesting reading, especially the last few lines

Seagulls plot swoop for Argyle striker Ashley Barnes

"If they are going to go with crazy money he's going to stay at Plymouth because he has one year left on his contract," said the Brighton boss.

"He's 20 and in a year's time we can have him for free — six months in fact because on January 1 we can make an offer.

"So it's up to Plymouth what they want to do with the player. We are working on plenty of things."

However, Poyet is mistaken in believing that Brighton could sign Barnes for free next summer. Argyle would be entitled to a compensation payment, provided they offered Barnes a new contract, because he would be aged under 24.

Brighton could also not approach the Bath-born striker in January as pre-contract agreements are not permitted domestically.

Confused? I thought compensation only had to be agreed if the player came through their youth team? I thought they bought him a year or two ago?

Sadly no. Its under 24 irrespective of where they started their career (always struck me as odd, that one).

My question is this: If pre-contacts are illegal, how has Beckford signed on with Everton or Chamakh with Arsenal?

Surely if pre contracts are not legal then no player could agree to sign for a new club until they are released. Thats not very fair on the player is it?

Due to my days on Football Manager, I can confirm Poyet has got it wrong as stated above.
> You cannot sign players on a pre-contract agreement domestically, you have to wait for it to expire.
> If the player does not leave the club in the set time you have to then pay a substantial compensation fee, I nearly paid 1.5 million compensation for Gavin Hoyte!

Didn't Baker sign a precontract with Coventry as well?

If Plymouth are going to demand silly money then I think it's best to just wait and make it clear we will simply get him for free if they dont see at a sensible price, he was never going to feature particularly heavily next season anyway.

Wasn't Painter able to leave on a free because the contract he was on was of lesser value than his previous one? Surely this is the only way Barnes could also leave on a free?

No Painter signed on a free because Swansea didn't offer him a contract.

Thanks for correcting. Am I riht to say that players can leave on a free if their contract offer is lesser than their current one though? I'm SURE that's the case.

SURE SO SURE

That is right. The club you are with have to offer you another contract at the same pay rate (or better) or you can leave on a free. I think that is what you are saying any way.

I believe it's 6 weeks before the end of a contract domestically. - It's 6 months if it's between anywhere else and the UK.

Thought that with 6 months left on a contract, players are free to negotiate contracts with new clubs?

And it is ridiculous that you can sign a player and get compensation if they are under 24, it should only be if they come through your youth team imo.

We can make Barnes an offer in January, however he cannot sign a pre contract agreement. If you remember we said to Forster he wa free to talk to other clubs in Jan. Also for Plymouth to get compensation his offer from them must be the same as we offer him. In addition if we do have to pay compensation it will be taken into account the fact he hasn't played for them and that he was signed a couple of years ago rather than being with the club since he was a schoolboy

Sorry, but that part is absolute rubbish. as long as they match his current deal, they are entltled to compensation.

Dp you think we matched Villa's offer to Barry?

We don't have to offer a pre-contract though, couldn't we sign him completely free when he gets released at the end of his contract next summer? albeit risking other clubs coming in and offering a bigger contract.
