I'm one of the very few that voted that I hope he succeeds, for reasons buried earlier on the thread. I was also someone who hated him when he left, for leaving us right at the time when all the hard work and faith was paying off, I've not forgiven him exactly but recognise what an important role he played and what a great job he did. I'm also like the vast majority that is excited by RDZ and the potential he is showing.

One interesting thought experiment is to go back to the time immediately after Leicester and ask ourselves if we'd rather none of this had happened and Potter was still here. Most will, I'm sure, reflect on the goings on and say we're pleased how it all worked out. It's certainly true that if it wasn't Chelsea it would have been someone and we'd always be looking over our shoulders every time a vacancy came up. But the other side of the coin is that his departure certainly put a dent in our progress. I reckon that if he'd have stayed we'd be having the season that Newcastle are having, and that still frustrates the heck out of me.

I don’t think we’d have matched Newcastle. The defeat at Fulham showed that as good as we were we could still be crap.

9th was great, but caicedo had a lot to do with that, it was a mistake holding him back for so long. Could so easily have been 13th as I recall in the last game played. But still good after an appalling mid period when we threw the good start away.

Another good start this season, would we have maintained that or thrown it away like last season? Doesn't look like Potter believed we would maintain it. We've improved our performances, there's not been a dud although there have been a few potteresque failures to score and I reckon a Potter team wouldn't have lost to villa.

We've certainly benefited from his greed so all positive for me! I do hope he bombs out at Chelsea though as it would be good for his education. Perhaps realise that when he said it was a team effort he was actually correct.

He's a great coach, great manager and both parties benefit from the relationship. The question at large is whether Potter has peaked, I'm not sure we have just yet. Strap in!!!

Unless 'holding Caicedo back' was time he needed to develop into the player he is today, and going forward.

i'm not sure about the Newcastle sentiment , they have spent a lot more money than us and have billions to play with , we are playing really well at the moment but i think top 8 is the best we can hope for , i'm obviously happy to be proved wrong on that one ....Potter ..?? i was filthy when he left with the entire back room staff as it was obviously planned long in advance and i thought it was a dog act by Boehly but i don't begrudge Potter success at Chelsea. Another team with gargantuan finances to draw on and whom i now dislike immensely.

But are Newcastle fundamentally better than us? We were all over them in the 0-0 earlier this season.

I think a lot of people are expressing bitterness at GP’s departure through rewriting of his tenure. As I remember it most of us enjoyed that relatively successful period. What happens at Chelsea and BHA subsequently doesn’t change that.

Maybe, maybe not. My guess would be: probably a few points more but not as many as Newcastle.

Every team can be crap so the loss against Fulham doesn't say a whole lot about anything really. Newcastle played 1-1 against Wolves and Manchester City 1-1 against Everton... no team goes through a season without some less than impressive performances.

Fulham loss also looked worse then than it does now. Feels like media and non-Fulham fans in general haven't really picked it up, but they are quite good.

Yup, Potter said that perhaps he should have played Caicedo earlier. Caicedo himself though (in Ecuadorian media) said that he probably wasn't ready before that. Perhaps both of them are right and he should have had more game time a bit earlier but don't know about the whole "should never have been loaned to Belgium" etc that some people claim, think it was a good experience for him despite his team being utterly shite.

Not if he kept picking shite teams like Fulham away, we threw three points away for no reason apart from Potter tinkering to much and not realising until it was to late. I read somewhere we have scored nine times more goals under RDZ than Potter in the same amount of games think we are doing rather well under RDZ.

Would imagine the buy-out clause for RDZ is £30+ millions (probably £40m+) and struggle to see any Italian club able to pay that for a manager.
