Great thread.

Opinion among fans seems as polarised as the US electorate, but I know which side I'm on.

The football we are playing is the most enjoyable ever. (Sorry Kit and Sully, I loved you too.)

It is a results that matter but what is going on is strange but positive. Under Hughton so many games we just sat back and never looked like scoring. Most of points gained were because we hung on rather then outplaying. Many including me fed up with playing well but no wins but dont kid yourself it would be better under Hughton. More likely same result but less chances.created. I know what I prefer

Listening to Lallana made me think "**** the bedwetters". Really.

A lot of them would rather be right (seeing the team lose) rather than being wrong and seeing the team win. Psychological stuff, quite tiresome.

I heard that Lallana interview different to you then.
“We were at home, we should be winning those games at home”.
That’s classic (so-called) bedwetters speak.
It’s a great interview. He doesn’t dress things up and you can see and hear his frustration with aspects of our play.
Refreshing to hear some proper honesty in post-match interviews .

I enjoy the differing opinions on here, it would be terribly boring if there wasn’t such a cross section of thoughts and ideas. What I absolutely cannot tolerate is ‘adults’ using that pathetic ****ing phrase every time someone has the audacity to post something that is deemed to be negative or moaning. It’s just a difference of opinions. Whenever I see a post containing ‘bedwetter’ I just skip by because you can’t take the content seriously from someone who uses that expression.

I’m the same, I immediately think grow the f*** up when I see the phrase.

I’m struggle to work out why some on here seem surprised football fans moan about their team if we don’t win....

Never seen Brighton play like this, even under Gus/Mullery. Fabulous footballing team with (absolutely currently) NO CUTTING EDGE.

Totally this, our style of play is so pleasing on the eye we are just lacking in the final third. Hopefully Wellbeck will be the man to turn it round and bang in a few.
Definitely Potter in, the results will come of that I'm sure.

I believe Welbeck could be excellent once he’s knocked the rust off. Excellent movement and intelligent interplay. Just hope he stays fit.

Excellent perhaps, but he has never been a prolific scorer at Premier League level. If there's an answer to the goalscoring problems, I doubt he's it. Perhaps bringing more calmness to the attack and supporting and steadying Maupay down could be his strength as well as getting in behind defences.

It's all so frustrating, because we're close to being a really good side. Last night we completely dominated a team who can cause trouble for anyone and did everything necessary to win until the ball got into the penalty area. Finally I think we got enough players forward, but again, a refusal to play an early cross from the left restricted the amount of pressure we put on their defence, and the set plays were poor once more. Where's the variety, the invention? Remember the corner we used to take with Colin Pates running in late to get an unchallenged header when Martin Hinshelwood was Barry Lloyd's coach? When was the last time we saw anything as different as that?

Yep, I'm a definite potter in.
I look back and see the Goldstone.....flooded toilets at the back of the north stand and third division football. I missed gillingham(bad fan) as working but radio showed me fourth division football. I ventured to the place where my daughter had her sports days. Cold, wet, windy and third/fourth division football. I witnessed the rise of the Amex on a daily basis, to be given second and now premier division football. There are still periods of a season when I will kick the imaginary dog and find a scapegoat for why we're not winning every game.
I'm still pinching myself as to where we are now in the footballing world, maybe I still have the small club mentality, fifty years plus watching my team is not long enough to lose that but on the whole....what a ride!

Bit bored of the negative thread titles on the front page - even if they do contain a good number of positive people in the replies. So I made this thread.

I’ve never been so excited to watch us play football than I have since Potter was appointed.
(my first match, as a kid, was at Goldstone, vs. Portsmouth, mid eighties - for reference)

The results WILL come.
It’s rough at the moment BUT we have a clear vision.
(it was extremely rough for Southampton but they also had/have a clear vision, and then something clicked for them. They are now top of the league)

We dominate possession and create more chances, against almost anyone.
We have some quality players: Lallana is tremendous and only getting better with every game, Welbeck is a very welcome addition, Lamptey is on another planet, etc. etc.
Our stats are through the roof compared to our points.
The team spirit looks strong.
We’ve had a good chunk of bad luck and we are struggling for clinical finishing.

If you are watching the games you know good things are happening.
I understand the frustration but, if we keep doing what we are doing, the results will come.

I think COVID set us back a bit this season (particularly when we reeled in the finances compared to some other clubs) but I’m still behind the board, the manager, the team, and the long term vision.
While COVID continues to be an issue, or worse, my expectations have been tempered. We all want to be a mid-table team, but it might take a bit longer.

Anyway, if you want to add some positivity to this thread, please go ahead.
If you feel the opposite, chip in.
I selfishly wanted to see a positive thread title in a sea of negativity on the front page.

We seem to be getting it right, moving the ball very smoothly from defence and midfield and looking dangerous approaching the opposition box. Our play in the final third leaves a lot to be desired. We overplay time and time again. One touch too many. Our crossing is dire and our set pieces just as bad. One free kick in the first half, crying out for a left footed curler, saw Bissouma, almost in desperation, try a right footed blaster, with the usual consequences. For all our possession and control yesterday, we didn't win enough corners simply because so much fizzled out in and around the box.
Lallana and Lamptey are different class and Welbeck looks a good acquisition. Bissouma is ever improving and White will get better and better. I still worry about Ryan's lack of dominance in the box and I'm sorry but we can't have Dan Burn trying to carve out chances in the box. This is an experiment that ran its course months ago. We have a leading striker out of touch, who, last season, was shooting on sight but now needs one touch too many all the time and frankly, shouldn't have been put straight back in last night. Maupay has already missed a lot of decent chances this season and is the main reason we haven't got more points on the board. Connolly and Welbeck will be a more direct partnership. We need more quality out wide. We struggle to get behind teams.
Our squad has grown and there is more strength in depth but the manager appears to struggle to know his best balance at times. The team needed a lift last night but he made no substitutions before 83 mins. The game was crying out for changes on the hour mark. He has to try and find the right combinations between Lallana, Bissouma, Trossard, Alireza, Mac, March, Alzate, Gross, Propper and dare I say it...Izquierdo ( our most potent weapon for a season and a half ) The biggest problem is that there is not a lot of goals amongst any of them, so the pressure falls back on the front men again. Maybe bringing Andone back in Jan may sharpen things up a bit.
Its our worst start to a season for 18 years so its no surprise that knives are being sharpened. Fans can't even vent their frustrations at the game and let off steam. We have, however, stayed unbeaten in the four games against lesser opposition ( 6 points ) but our age old problem of failing to ruffle the feathers of the bigger boys puts more pressure than there should be on games like last night. We could easily have taken 4 points off Chelsea and United but we are prone to too many mistakes in these games and opportunities invariably slip away. Zonal marking has already cost us dear this season. Defensively, we are not good enough to carry it out. Teams isolate Dunk and Webster has poor positional sense. Lamptey is brilliant but small and others will take far post advantage of this.
All in all, we aren't far away but our problem is the biggest problem of all, goalscoring. Potter can talk till the cows come home about quality of performance but it counts for nothing if you can't score. You look through our whole squad and there just aren't enough goals anywhere, particularly midfield. He is not going to wave a magic wand and goals are suddenly going to start flowing. We lack natural goalscorers full stop. Nothing else matters until this is addressed.

In three weeks we will be playing against Liverpool, not MK Dons or Rochdale.

We will probably play great football and will invariably lose.

I do think there are lots of similarities with what Southampton are doing and agree with the sentiment about how it clicked for them and could for us to.

But we are a player short to make that happen ...... Southampton found the difference in Danny Ings a player who often converts the only chance they have when they have played poorly or the player who has dragged them forward and lifted other players to his level.

Problem is finding those players as obviously they don’t grow on trees and aren’t cheap.

Palace with Zaha, West Ham with Antonio, Villa with Grealish all have that player they look to who drags them through and makes the difference.

We aren’t far away from where we need to be, we just need to find that difference maker.

Let's be honest Wellbeck and Maupay aren't going to be "prolific" but ten goals each during the season will keep us competitive and probably secure in the League.

As is often the way with NSC, it divides into extremes.
You’re a bedwetter or a happyclapper.
It’s not as simple as that, in reality.
Would anyone dispute that the club’s vision is a good one? To Play stylish football, bring through youth, community club etc.
Equally would anyone dispute there are some fundamental problems with the first team ? Clearest example - our pitiful set pieces, which smell of poor coaching. Does it make you negative to point this out? Are you positive to not acknowledge it, or are you just conveniently turning a blind eye?
Both sides are right, it just depends which way you look at it.
Personally, I’m Potter in. He’s one cog in a broad club vision that I admire. We are trying to do something special. It’s just not proving very easy.
I’d be very happy if an assistant coach with top level experience was brought in though. Something is lacking.

My sentiments exactly, great post.

I don’t want GP to be sacked at all. But we’re not failing to win due to lady luck or biased VAR officials. Much work to do on set pieces and creativity through the middle, how to overcome a deep block.

It crossed my mind too about an experienced no 2 coming in to help. Potter’s cut a helpless, sad looking sole on the touchline in these two home games.

In no way wanting a spending spree in January, but I think two areas could do with an upgrade - LWB and a DM specialist.
