No I didn’t say I thought we would stay up....no one knows ..(the obvious answer).....x games ago..a lot of people were getting a tad over excited ...we’ve seen what happens if a few results go the other way....and likewise if a few go our way things change again...worry? I think more like huge frustration...but after 52 years of the Albion...nothing new

The last time we had this much bad luck was 86-87 season when we went down to the old division 3 . We had a good team as well then and the amount of games we lost to last minute goals that season was incredible

I didn’t believe the hype..but neither the over reaction the other way

I’m a consistent GP in.

My view of all football, going back decades, is that the quality of fit players is almost everything. There was a quote once by Taggart where he admitted that.

Guardiola has 22 great players and wins everything. Liverpool lose their 3 CB’s and lose a lot. Villa get lucky with next to no best 11 injuries this season and fly high. Everton spend £550m and finally have a team that can win some games. Abramovich spends £1b and wins a load of trophies.

Tony Bloom hasn’t funded (or had the opportunity to give us) an elite striker in the 4 seasons. So we spend 4 years living on a relegation precipice, we get used to losing as a matter of course, we bemoan “our rotten luck”.

I knew I’d be flabbergasted at the reactions yet again on here. I’m far less frustrated by Potter and more by those who are almost blindly devoted to his team. Has an Albion manager ever achieved so little and received such a degree of loyalty in such a short amount of time?

2 points in 12 against largely bottom half sides. In the space of 5 days we’ve lost to our bitter rivals and relegation fodder. We have only beaten ONE bottom half side all season. Of our 5 wins, only one of those have been by more than a goal - and that was in the second game of the season. And what’s even more laughable is that in the same week as these disappointments, I see utter tosh (IMO) about Potter being too good for us and that we are very close to being top 6! My days, if I was an opposition fan coming into this board, I’d laugh at us.

Of all the things that frustrate me, it’s the fact that the expectations of fans has fallen to such a degree that today’s performance is considered as “good”. Irrespective of missed penalties, today’s performance was absolutely bang average at best. Hardly anybody scored a player higher than 6 on the ratings thread - so how can that collectively be classed as “playing well”?

WBA got an early goal and then sat back, allowing us to have plenty of the ball but stifle us in the final third - every single bottom half manager with half a brain will now know that this is the surest way to beat us. Today’s football was not exciting for me. As Weststander alluded to, our perceptions of a good performance has been radically skewed. A GOOD performance against relegation fodder would have been a comprehensive two or three goal victory. Palace beat them 5-1. Leeds beat them 5-0. Fulham beat them 2-0. And what do we do? Lose 1-0. Even if one of those penalties had gone in, it wouldn’t have led to the complete, confident 90 minute performance that we should be putting in at least sometimes against bottom half teams. It’s not any better than last season. In fact last season the SAME players (minus Mooy and Duffy) produced far more exciting football under the same manager. By their own standards, Potter and the entire team are underperforming and underachieving.

I’ve got to the stage where I almost laughed when we missed the second penalty. I’ve followed the Albion for the entirety of my almost 30 years on this planet and I’m reduced to such apathy that I wasn’t even that disappointed that Welbeck missed. How is it exciting watching the Albion this year when you can predict with 95% certainty that we will not beat the teams around us, irrespective of how “well” we play?

I was OUT at the turn of the year, FENCE after Liverpool and back to OUT now. In truth I have nothing against Potter. He seems like a nice bloke and I still don’t think we’re in real danger of going down. If we did, I think Potter would be the right man to take charge of us in the Championship. But this season has been a regression in almost every department, and he has neither earned the loyalty of his prior achievements (unlike CH or even Poyet) nor shown anything this year that would suggest to me that we would progress next season to anywhere close to the ambitions the club have professed to harbour.

Potter is an innovative and sophisticated manager. I can understand why some respected football people think he could succeed at a higher level.
But I’m increasingly convinced he is not the right manager for us. Not without the kind of investment that is unlikely to come. We need a more grounded approach.
Potter and Swansman will one day be off. And they’ll be fine. We are merely a stepping stone.

Decent summary. You will be criticized by the true believers.
Like you I think GP is the right person to manage us in the Championship next season.

To be fair to Potter, it would be with any manager.
But we have enough quality in the squad not to go down. Potter will have made a massive hash of it if we go down.

Yep. I think our consistently high XG is usually because we have loads of quite poor chances (but they all add up).........not today though. I’ll ask junior to do a bit of work on it because he's a geek on this stuff but I think the conclusion will be
-not actually that many ‘good’ chances (today excepted)
-we fire blanks when we do get a good chance

The Palace game was an aberration - neither of their chances would usually be converted

Seem to always be on the end of an aberration :(

Aren’t we a bottom 6 budget club?

Eventually, clubs in that bracket drop.

The quality of our strikers is poor to awful.

Selective at best. No mention of us beating Liverpool and Spurs (and, even bigger, obviously, Bielsa’s Leeds) and our longest PL unbeaten run. What did WBA do against Liverpool?

We weren’t good today though at all (even though we should still have won easily with 3 gilt-edged opportunities). We’re popgun up front and something needs to change.

Not Potter's fault that we are an absolute shambles in front of goal. Last 3 games would have yielded 9 points if we had just 1 in form attacking player (and a slice of fecking luck for once).

Yes but it wont go on, i've read most of your posts on all the match day threads and seldom do you have anything positive to add especially if things are not going our way. If you really believe we have deserved these bad results this season then there's no point in my replying.

The last three games we have been easily the better side as the stats bear out 58%, 75% & 70% possession, 66 shots for 13 against and a grand total of ONE point. Bad finishing yes but bad team no. the luck will turn, these are not bad players they are low in confidence in front of goal but i'm sure this will pass and better results are ahead. Keep the faith.

You can quote whatever stats you like I prefer the league table . If credit is due I’ll say so . Im not going to say we r the better side when we lose no points for tippy tappy . Low on confidence I’ll agree with but again that’s down to a poor manger look at his home record ?.West Brom have won more at home this season than we have

Our striker pool is indeed dire, but we have several very good players, going by lower Premier League standards.
It’s entirely theoretical but I am of the belief that other managers would be able to keep that squad up.
Staying up is, I would imagine, a minimal expectation.
FWIW I think Potter will get us over the line.

Potter in even if we go down. What more can he do? It’s not his fault that he doesn’t have attacking players good enough to score goals at this level.

We generally play good football, often go toe to toe with better funded and longer established Prem teams but struggle to put away the teams around/below us despite creating numerous chances .... mainly due to sh*t finishing which is hardly the manager's fault. In!
