And he just happens to get things moving as an election is coming up. Shame there wasn't an election during 9/11 as Labour couldn't then be bothered to help those of us stranded in America and other places.

frankly i think its a bit sad to try and say this is an election ploy. we have the 4th or so largest Navy in the world, its obvious thing to do. in fact i'd only question why they didn't send ships out to Spain and other ports earlier.

Why shouldn't the Government at the time tried to have tried rescued Brits who still after a week were stranded due to dispalced Airplanes?
I think the 9/11 situation was fundamentally different because the government knew that air travel would resume. At the moment, nobody really knows how long aircraft will be grounded. It will be interesting to see the government response should the volcano carry on spewing ash into British airspace.
In response to the initial question in thew thread, I think this may win a few votes, but it won't win as many as a days worth of campaigning (in my opinion, like).
Hardly difficult to redirect 3 naval ships so quite why it should help his election chances is beyond me.
One might question why it's only been done day SIX of the problems - I hope our government can move faster in a real emergency.

Of course the government should help out - and it has.
This is the fifth day - not the sixth - of air travel disruption, for people stranded at airports. The navy has been sent to help people who have since made their way to coastal ports, and can't get on ferries. These people hadn't got to these ports by Thursday - and probably not too many by Friday - when the disruption started.
You don't send the Navy lightly.

Oh don't get me wrong I think it's great the Government are getting off their backsides and actually doing something. However, if you were stuck in the USA (and other places) during 9\11 and got the response from Government officials "it's not our problem, you're on your own"...what would you be thinking right now?

BEcause sending in a load of our ships to other countries waters needs to be discussed between nations to make sure that they know what they are doing there. We don't want to have to use trident against teh likes of china now do we?
Nations that are both our allies, in the EU and in Nato - oh yes ... really difficult ! Not sure what you mean about Trident and China - what does that have to do with this ?
The trident and china thing was a joke, CMD said that we needed Trident if China attacked, which say our boats went in to china and they attacked... it was a very scraping of the barrel joke. i'll get my coat.
Its easy to discuss provisions to allow our vessels in to a nations waters yeah, but it needs to be discussed, and other national leaders may have not had the time because of other affairs. Unfortunatly, Spainish national leaders won't drop everything they hav going on to help us out.

It is actually Day 5 of this, but otherwise I agree with you.
It was obvious on Saturday morning that this was not going to be over in a couple of days. People stuck at Madrid and Barcalona had already decided to head for Calais, having been told there was no chace of a flight 'for the forseeable future'
Saturday morning IMO these decisions should have been taken.
People in Spain are being told 29th April is the earliest date for a flight home - even if the go ahead was given today to restart flights.
Anyway, better late than never.

I've worked out that you could fit nearly 4000 sun loungers on the deck of HMS Ark Royal
