In the wake of last night's postponed match it reminded me of a match I attended away at Swindon years ago which was abandoned as a result of the appalling conditions, rain, sleet and snow and a completely waterlogged pitch. We were losing 4-0 when the match was abandoned halfway through the second half. We celebrated like we'd won a cup final. I've just researched the date and I discovered it was exactly 40 years ago tomorrow. January 1st 1977.
Does anyone else have any nostalgic memories of postponed or abandoned games that stick in your memory for whatever reason?

Arriving at Halifax, just in time for the radio to announce that it had been rained off. Pub, curry house, then home.

I was there too!
I was only a teenager and was in Swindon to see my Nan.
Consequently we were in the Swindon end.
We took a bit of stick as they increased their lead.
Something about the game at the Goldstone earlier that season. NOt sure what happened there.

Also went to the rearranged fixture which was towards the end of the season.

2-1 to us if I remember correctly

You had to laugh :)

Snow, electrical failure, 'Mr Carrow to The Main Stand' anyone.

I was at the Swindon abandonment when 4-0 down. Great joy.

Went to Bristol Rovers away in the seventies - couldn't say which year but it was postponed when we were 20 miles away.

Best one though was Walsall away in February 1970 when I hitched in a snowstorm to Birmingham, slept in a shop doorway frozen and then caught a bus to Walsall in the morning to unsurprisingly find it postponed. Went to Birmingham vs Leicester instead.

No, we actually lost the replay 2-1 (10th May 1977). But it didn't matter by then as we were pretty much promoted by then anyway. Had the original game not been abandoned and we had lost 4-0 or most probably by more the way things were going it might have affected us psychologically and derailed our promotion push. As it was it gave everyone a feeling of elation. That season could have finished very differently had that match not been abandoned.

I remember that one. Clearly remember that 'Mr Carrow' tannoy announcement...had been snowed upon walking to the ground, then the electrics packed in and we drove home. Never been back to Norwich since.

Given Cardiff was called off I am sure a game against Cardiff was called off due to the pitch at the Goldstone being under the influence of water. My memory maybe somewhat blurred since I drunk an unhealthy amount of 6X and ended sleeping at Burgess Hill station until Sunday morning

I was probably there at the same time as you. Arrived at the Shay, with my daughter, to find the rugby posts were still in situ from the previous night's RL fixture. To rub salt in the wound I had hired a car to make the journey from Southampton ( I don't think my old banger would have made it! ), and I checked Ceefax ( remember that! ) at 8.00 to make sure that the game was still on. Grrr!

P.S. It was first of the two postponed fixtures for the Albion at Halifax that season - April 2001.

I remember travelling down to the Goldstone from Hertfordshire in the late 80's to be greeted by the news that the match was postponed due to opposing team (it might have been Leicester) had the flu and the match was off.

Yep, I was at that re-arranged fixture when we lost 2-1. We were coasting it after Peter Ward put us 1-0 up, we were already promoted but could have challenged to be champions. I think the team then decided to go holiday in the second half. Misty memories and all that!

This is correct.. 1995 I believe.
It was called off about 1 hour before kick off, and I remember walking back down Sackville Rd and loads of fans walking up simply not believing me

Annoyingly I had already bought a program, and was miffed to find the rearranged fixture was exactly the same program with a different cover!
