Just seen it - really liked it. Enjoyed the humour, the ESB-esque bleakness, the Rey/Ren dynamic and their development. The film was well paced but did feel like we shed some detail to get a fair chunk of story in.

Watched it last night and I'm really relieved to find many on here who felt as I did leaving the cinema: not sure whether it was good or not. After a night's sleep, I think I'm leaning towards thinking it was okay.

2. Why did every single line Luke say have to be delivered with such drama/purpose? Sounded so fake and forced.

Because Mark Hamill has never been able to act! There is a reason Luke is pretty much his only part.

I'm not really a Star Wars fan. I went to see it last night with three ex-colleagues who are all big SW fans and for the last three years now we've met up to go and see the latest.

I really enjoyed it. I thought it was easily the best film in the franchise. I loved the touches of humour (proving that it doesn't take itself too seriously), I loved the multi-plot lines so it wasn't just a case of "the hero does this, then they do that then they do something else",and the James Bond style switch of locations. Most of all I liked how they dealt with Luke as it would have been so easy to make him the bog-standard 'Indiana Jones' character. The time flew by, and at the end I could have easily watched another hour. I forgave it its clunky moralising.

However my three buddies (the SW fans) were all distinctly underwhelmed with it. None shared my view that it was the 'best ever' and they all had various gripes that pretty much echo the criticisms on here from those who are fans. We stood outside the cinema for about 30 minutes arguing about it! The only agreement was that it was way better than Episodes I. II and III (the comeback films).

2nd part of my question.

If he can summon objects with such ease, how come he didn’t Jedi his way out of the stables he was stuck in?

Because unlike Mary Su... I mean Rey it takes a hell of a lot of training to understand let alone use the force.

Most people who have it aren't even aware they have it.

because he's a kid and doesnt understand his potential. recall Anakin was gifted, just didn't know why.

Only she isn't. Thought she understood Ren - failed. Couldn't save the resistance, only take a few tie fighters with her, Luke saves the resistance - failed. She is conflicted, went straight for the dark side - failed. If you really knew what a Mary Sue was after banging on about it for 2 years you'd b able to go into the cinema with an open mind.

Luke knew Yoda, Obi Wan, even Leia and yet both Ren & Rey have more force power than he's ever felt. You therefore have to accept that the force maybe impacting on Rey and Ren differently than any other force person before.

We'll never agree of course, but just the parallel of Luke feeling the good in his father and surrending to the emperor, Rey gets it completely wrong with Ren. Rey is a flawed character, she therefore cannot be a Mary Sue.

Everyone knows you can’t rate a Star Wars film until you’ve watched it 100 times .

It’s why it won’t go in my list until multiple viewings .

If he can summon objects without effort, surely he'd be able to open up a couple of space barn-doors.

I'm not asking why he didn't tackle the order solo, just make a little escape out of one room.

what they’ve done with Luke character is an insult to the fans who’ve stuck by the franchise IMO. At least the Force Awakens made Han and Chewie essential to the story. In TLJ they’re merely bystanders. The story telling was awful (seriously what was the point of spending the previous film looking for Luke?)

Have to disagree. Luke always was a bit of a dick right? In ANH, he's all bumping into people bars, stropping out with his guardians because he can't go shopping with his mates, teenage dizzy over a girl in a hologram, saying stupid lines like 'I'm Luke Skywalker I'm here to rescue you'. Petulant annoying spoilt brat in ESB when Yoda is trying to train him. Then suddenly a full on pretentious guru in RotJ - when we think of how powerful Jedi are, he makes a right balls up in Jabba's palace for example.

I think they got this grizzled old man, a hero and legend of the galaxy a status that he feels he barely deserves, messes up the training of his nephew, tries to go into hiding where he stews on how little he knows or understands about the force, how the Jedi were wrong all along to think they could just control the force and bring peace to the galaxy. I thought Yoda's appearance and light chuckle at him for being 'the same old Luke' was brilliant, but actually the solitude, the disconnection with the force has led to an understanding and appreciation of it that allows him to do something monumental, a final act of sacrifice that required all the power and potential he never fulfilled, and he saves the resistance. I think this mirrors the solitude both Obi Wan and Yoda experienced that allowed them to reappear after death through the force.

Luke was always flawed. It would have been wrong to make Luke some wise Yoda like character who suddenly trains Rey and he and she save the galaxy or whatever. We have to remember Luke is or was so flawed it needed Obi Wan to convince Yoda to train in him in the first place. If you really watch ANH again, this really is the person the young Luke was going to grow up to be.

It’s like 1980 all over again , people walking out of the 2nd instalment and not really sure what they just watched or if they like it or not .

Love it

and go where, do what? he's been born into the life, doesn't realise theres anything else. anyway i dont think theres supposed to be a big thing to him, its just to let the view know there are other people out there that will join the rebelion, and that some will always be force sensitive.

I can only offer conjecture that a) the appearance of Fin and Rose gave these kids with no hope, something to dream about. Perhaps that encounter has unlocked his force ability the same as the circumstances in TFA awakened Rey's. b) he doesn't realise it is a power that could be applied to other things, he barely even realises he's done that to the broom it is just so natural, it's never occurred to him to escape, he's therefore never tried to use that power for anything else.

I think the point of showing the kid move the broom was that with the First Order fully in control of the Galaxy AND particularly Canto Bight, overt shows of force power would probably be treated as treason. I'd expect any children with nascent force powers will need to hide them for fear of retribution.

Was good to see Vyvyan Basterd on the bridge of a Star Destroyer.

Was hoping SPG might have made a cameo.
