Putting him on the goal line for one of their free kicks seemed a bit pointless tho.

No one dislikes Heskey as a player more than me, everyone knows that on this site, I thought he had a decent game last night, he did what he was in the side for in my opinion.

However the reason he is the side is because he supposedly brings the best out of Rooney...well that certainly wasnt the case last night.

As long as we persist with either Heskey or Crouch as a front man we wont do anything in this world cup, we still go long ball from the full backs to often when we have the big man upfront, we should be keeping the ball and playing through midfield where our best players are.

It was crying out for Defoe not Crouch in those last 20 mins, a really sharp little finisher not another lump changing like for like Heskey/Crouch.

For me we have to Keep Gerrard central, that means playing him behind Rooney who becomes the furthest player forward like with Man U then Barry can come into Central midfield and give Lampard a bit more freedom to bomb forward, something he didnt have the opportunity to do last night.

Positives are there is STILL time to sort it, and we will still win the group and can win the World Cup

Also i havent seen anyone better yet..

Oh - and I haven't seen a thread yet moaning about the refereeing or cheating or diving. A major positive for this World Cup. Of course it's early days but i'm hopeful.

You just have to compare last night to the performances giving against Mexico, who totally outplayed us, and Japan, who deflected crosses in to even things up. We were lively and endeavourous, never perfect or the surest of footed, but for harder-working than we'd been. And that's what Capitan Pello demands.
Gerrard looked to take charge, and no player has done that for a while. Lampard was his normal dithering self. Lennon scurrying. SWP letting himself down with the ball, but still racing around. Rooney will come good. We all know how annoyingly good he is. Heskey was vibrant and elephantine. Cole was tenacious and difficult to pass. Terry was solid enough. Carragher came on and looked a little out of his league, but should still be ok enough. Johnson was nippy and attack-minded. And Green was Green and doesn't believe in clean sheets.
We were ok. Better than i thought. Even if not as good as the press promised we would be in their salesmen ways.

Thought we looked really dangerous going down the right.
We restricted them to 2 decent goal chances (not including the freak goal)
I lost count of the number of balls slid across their 6 yard box that needed either very brave goal keeping or scrambling away by the defence.
Heskey showed why he's in the squad.

We've been crap in opening games plenty of times and bounced back, does anyone remember how poor we were in our first 2 games in '86 when we went on to win the next 2 games 3-0 before being cheated out of it by the eventual winners?

I thought we were good last night. We looked threatening on the flanks with SWP and Lennon. Heskey looked back to his best with his hold up ability and his winning headers. Should of taken that chance though. USA did a good job on Rooney, he had to come deep to get the ball. But he shouldn't find any problems against Algeria or Slovenia for space. Johnson and Ashley Cole bombing forward was also a positive, just bring on Friday now....

Great to see a thread with a balanced view of the game, and I pretty muh concur with most of the posts on here. England certainly wern't shit, and on another day we'd have won that match comfortably - the USA were VERY fortunate to escape with a point, and they know it.

Individually there were more good performances than bad, and we had them on the back foot for most of the game. Rooney was disappointing but we know he'll come good, and with the pace down the flanks, we'll have more joy against a team that hasn't just set out for a draw.

Not a brilliant performance by any means, but nor was it the car-crash a lot of people are making out. Same old same old though, to most of the media and the sheep who follow it, we're either world-beaters or complete and utter shit, with nothing in between.

For me the midfield was the problem area Rooney had to keep dropping deep to pick up the ball, put five in midfield and rooney up front on he's own where he can do more damage.

I think they call it the 'facebook generation' Sam - and unfortunately that covers a lot of the twats on here. Many who are in their 30s and 40s but seem to conform to that mentality.

Watched the highlights twice now. England were unlucky and USA created little. England deserved to win 100%. Lennon's run and ball accross just after we scored was so close to being a tap in but for some good last min defending. Yes Heskey should have scored, so too SWP really but it's a shame Heskey missed as it gives idiotic meatheads the chance to have a pop at him when he actually produced an accomplished performance.

Worst thing is as per my post on the official match thread i said it would be 1-1 and KNEW it would bring the usual moaning twat-heads out.
