What if the National League decided it wasn't a problem for them? You'd then get the bizzare situation of their clubs being promoted into regional football!

Wouldn’t surprise me if they closed everything down outside the top 6 in the Prem. It is way more palatable to the football authorities to make the rich richer rather than create a more financially equitable competition.

I'm surprised is took someone so long to making this glaringly obvious point. There is easily enough money in English football to sustain 92 teams. It just needs to be distributed more sensibly and fairly.

It's also incumbent on chairmen, ours included, not to gamble with their clubs future for short term success. Although financial disparities between the leagues strongly incentives this.

Good post. And of course it's not long ago that we were standing at the gates of oblivion with other clubs actually voting on whether to allow us to stay in the League. Really feel for the fans up there.

And in twenty years little has changed. Mismanagement continues and the EFL remains as ineffective as ever.

Notts may be wound up later this month because the latest takeover bid has come to nothing. Forest are having a collection at their friendly v. European opposition for County's staff, who haven't been paid for two months.

Perhaps a levy on all football transfers over a certain amount could go into a fund to at least ensure peoples wages were paid.
The amount of money required to save this old club from extinction is a pittance for most of the top clubs.

Its a nice sentiment. But why should well-run clubs have to bail out the basketcase clubs who's incompetent owners have pushed them to the brink ? That would just provide a safety net that would inevitably be abused by unscrupulous owners.

Everyone has to cut their cloth accordingly IMO.

Its a nice sentiment. But why should well-run clubs have to bail out the basketcase clubs who's incompetent owners have pushed them to the brink ? That would just provide a safety net that would inevitably be abused by unscrupulous owners.

It would be good if the league had a fund that made sure the staff and players got paid - but hit the club harder in other ways so that it isn't an attractive option. Instant relegation, for example. The staff and players of a badly run club shouldn't pay for an incompetent owner, but the club should pay a heavy price that decreases its value to the owner.

Sad for Bury but clubs have been going bust since year dot. I don't see any evidence of anything new. Not all organisations last forever. The Catholic church is the exception, not the rule.

Which well run clubs would they be? Is there any professional club that hasn't lost £MMM at some point over the years in the pursuit of glory, they just may happen to have wealthier owners than some - Perhaps Bury are a poor example and have overdone it but there's many many clubs on the brink out there and that wage inflation is being driven by the PL and the top few clubs in particular. It seems to be a reflection of real life that those with the lowest income are being told to cut their cloth when all they're actually trying to do is stay afloat in world controlled by the very richest.

Some people on here appear to have short memories, would some of the suggestions for regional leagues and that there are 'too many professional clubs' have been so readily welcomed a few years ago, when Brighton were down there amongst them?
