They had one child of their own, and were very happy to have done that.
They heard about the situation in China with orphans, and after giving the matter serious thought, they looked at the ramifications and legalities and decided it was something they felt enthused about doing.
They are interesting people, having lived together on a sailboat (they were my neighbours for about 4 years), and then going off on that boat to sail through the Panama Canal, up through the Caribbean to the East Coast of the US up to Maine. He's an engineer and paid well, so after a spell living in Seattle (where they had theirs and then adopted the Chinese lass) they moved to Virginia, before adopting again. Obviously they had found the first adoption to be a rewarding success for them.

Going through the process here and then taking it abroad is so tough, hence the question.
