The problem is that you re assuming they want to get out of it because thats what you would do. They like it too much sit around smoking weed, they dont want to have to work hard. I was pretty much the same at that age never got anything done, you have a different perspective at that age although i didnt get involved in criminal stuff, my brother did though, used to sell drugs, steal clothes from shops. As for his mates its still a way of life now, theyve barely worked in 15 odd years of adult life
I am not assuming that they want to get out of it. What I am saying is that there are reasons that they want to live this life, mainly that their options are narrow and few (by their perception at least). Those reasons are many and varied I suspect and some are just lazy but most don't know any other way and can't see any other way out the shit situation they were born into.
Why would someone keep trying to get out of a situation they see no way out of? It is easier and less frustration to accept your lot and make the best of it.
I too was the same at their age but reflecting on the reasons it goes deeper than just having fun. There was a recession on i saw no opportunity to find a job that interested me, I tried a business studies course at college and they told me I would graduate as fodder for TSB or Amex. I saw very little future for myself and for my friends so I got of my nut in fields and at parties and spent days on end sat round a bong. Luckily I had some things going for me that people born into poverty do not. I had a supportive family background and working family culture, a reasonable education and a wide network of people who offered me opportunities to sort my self out.
