Yes it was great fun waiting for the stones which you could not see coming ready to take your eyes out, still as long as its only one eye that's ok, my memory of the 80's was those who wanted trouble didn't take the cowardly route and through stones and didn't attack their own fans. There were not both fans together onthe bridge either.

There were plenty of hooligans who didn't discriminate about who they attacked in the 70's and 80's. Just my observation from the time.

I didn't really see much of an issue last year, some of the homophobic chanting got out of hand with kids around- I heard one Palace fan joke that a Brighton dad passed his kid around his mates, and chants of aids and taking it up the arse which IMO is OTT. Particularly in reference to aids, and passing kids around, you have to be a very sick minded individual to joke about those issues. I didn't see a lot of physical aggro aside from the coin throwing which reading on here brighton fans seem to be as much at fault for, there were Palace fans trying to jump the fence on to the platform which caused a bit of aggro, I think it would be helpful if more police were stationed around here as unmonitored it just allows the fans to get in each others faces whilst waiting for the train.

I dont think that the police do enough about inappropriate chanting, personally I had a go at a police officer for his lack of action after the Birmingham game last year when a tense situation was caused by such chants and complete inaction by the police. But the police have to be in the vicinity to hear deal with those issues so sometimes it may be excusable.

Keep them in a pen after the match for up to a week if necessary without food and water and then gas the survivors. Extreme ? But of it stops trouble. And remember these are not normal people.

Totally agree with your comments

I was standing with my Palace scarf on chatting to a couple of Brighton fans, whilst standing on the bridge waiting for the train...a few stones came over and it was the said Brighton fans who shouted down at the yobs throwing stones..so yes there was a mixed set of fans on the bridge with no trouble with each other.

If the yobs what trouble they will find trouble it does not matter whether you locked in or not as most if not all the trouble will be elsewhere IMO.

No I am not going as yet because I did not get a ticket, I am trying to get one in the home end...dont worry I will sit and watch football and then go home!!

Exactly. The majority of games I attended in the 70's and 80's I spent half my time looking over my shoulder. Hoolies from that era didn't give a monkey's who they attacked.

Last year other than the trouble before the game in town and then after at brighton station, the main bottle neck was falmer. There were palace chavs throwing coins and pissing off the bridge onto the brighton-bound train queue, and our own meathead Stone Island contingent throwing stones and coins back up at the bridge and across the platforms.

Both were as bad as each other and both proved they see no distinction between someone up for a fight and a 'scarfer' wanting to get home. A girl in front of me was hit in the head by a coin that whizzed past my shoulder, literally six inches lower and she would've lost an eye. That's the point - people can say 'let them out and police it, most people behave' but the idiots (on both sides) who don't behave can't be trusted to stick to their own - they're hard enough to throw a punch but only if it's a teenager on his own etc.

Innocent people could get hurt from fuckwits wanting to front up and it only needs one punch and someone hitting their head on the concrete when they land and suddenly it's not handbags, it's potentially a murder/manslaughter case. Look at that tragic case of the Connor lad (Saunders?) who the foundation is for. Shut the pubs beforehand, lock the home fans in afterward for 20/30mins (to be widely communicated well in advance), kettle palace back onto a direct train to croydon. Simples.

So " who's up peter ward " would be in poor taste ?

It really IS that simple.
I can ony guess that the ob have every intention of keeping them back for a while but, in the meeting, they wanted to give the impression of a 'softly softly' and 'we'll treat you all like adults' approach.

If there is a repeat any trouble after this years game, I wonder if the Police would consider for future games, escorting all the Palace fans straight to another station (Moosecombe?) and have trains there which don't call at Falmer so there would be no Brighton fans aboard them to take them away from the area (maybe one going Lewes bound the other towards Brighton or maybe all straight to Croydon?)

Seems strange that the game is on a Sunday at 12pm because the police are worried about it kicking off and now they are putting all the Palace fans in a pub and letting them leave the ground whenever. If they were going to do this why couldn't it be a 3pm Saturday game?

Far less drinking time with an earlier kick off (so fans are unlikely to be drunk and then cause trouble) and also it will still be fairly light for quite a while after the game so it is harder for trouble makers to go unseen should anything happen

I fink we should just smash em up before they the get a chance to cause trouble. A good fumping would keep em quiet. I have sent this in an email to Sussex police. I fink they agree because they have asked me to wait in as they are sending someone to talk to me in person.

there should be some temporary fencing from the away end to the station so they are segregated.

this will insure minimum contact and eliminate the risk of catching anything and allow a clean shot from the bridge stone throwers.

seriously, we have this everytime we play them, completely over the top reaction.
yes, you will get small pockets of trouble.
yes, you will get all the homophobic stuff
yes, you will get stuff thrown and innocent people getting hurt.

we all know its wrong, but it will always happen unless both sets of away fans get banned from each fixture....... not going to happen, deal with it.

I saw this on Twitter, I find it a bit odd.

Surely the police are the experts here and simply take their experiences from the last clash and look to put right the things that went wrong?

I'd rather they got on planning the job, they are paid professionals, what is a consultation with fans going to achieve exactly?
