I'd imagine the captain has the right to complain to the ref about suspected racism from the crowd and if the ref ignores it or doesn't agree (which is most likely) then the players have every right to walk off.

Martin Samuel is excellent - even though he now writes for the Mail...

Interesting innit that France are hosting the next Euros? That's three times they've hosted them now - plus two World Cups.

England have only hosted each once. Yet which country has the best stadiums, two of the best supported leagues and a bigger football culture...?
And which country historically has blood on its hand when it comes to football fans and stadiums?

As for counting the number of times these tournaments have been hosted, the WC only really started to matter after the war. The 1938 finals in France were not relevant as the best nations (us!) didn't even bother to compete. And The Euros only started to matter in 1980 in France when it changed to a group format.

Since 1950, France has had one WC and since one Euro tournament from 1980 onwards - same as us.

Platinis statement makes it clearer that if there is intolerable racist abuse, then the team as a whole has to leave the field, led by the captain, rather than leaving it to individual players to decide. Ideally, the opposition would also walk, leaving the result void.

Its all dependant on whether the referee actually deals with the issue. If he ignores it, then the player has every right to walk off. If he takes action then ok.

I may be on shaky ground here but it will probably depend on the level of abuse... One twat in the crowd shouting disgusting abuse is one thing, large elements of the crowd is another. Is it really likely that the ref will stop a game for one abusive dick? Probably not... For a large crowd? More likely.

To be honest, I think most of the neo-Nazi thugs have been priced out of the big games. I do see there being some issues with the earlier games though - and I predict not one referee (or UEFA) will do anything about it.

Did I miss us winning a European champioship?
