you must have seen it, from time to time, admittely far too little for our liking, he showed flashes of why he should be kept IN the team.

Sorry bigc but I agree with LI.
Leon up front gets bashed around by big defenders and no protection from refs.

Molango travelled with the squad but was not on the bench.

And I thought you were a big boy who could look after himself :lolol:

Of course what you saying here is right, a lot of people on NSC agree with you and apply this kind of faulty logic, as follows.

It goes like this.

Leon is obviously our most skillful and talented player (true). So therefore I will adopt an attitude of blind faith towards him and believe that he can do the business for us up front. I will disregard all the evidence from the games he's played there this season when he's been muscled out by defenders who are not only as quick as him but often quicker and far more powerful.

How many games has Leon played up front this season to disprove this? A huge humber.

McGhee has faith in Leon's abilities but not blind faith. He's done the video analysis and concluded that Leon must be given more space in which to operate away from tight marking. Given that realisation has coincided with us losing Darren Currie, playing him wide left was an obvious solution.

The only sad thing was that Leon didn't play well there either yesterday. Cue another headache for McGhee.

We were never goin to get anything more than a point the ref was gonna make sure of that. He was obviously worried that any decision against the BIG club would put him in the spotlight. Most biased ref i have ever seen.......and i've been following the albion for over 30 years.

Sure, but how is that different from last season? Defenders at the lower level tend to be the big, strong, thuggish type, whilst at this level they are quicker and less in need of resorting to "bashing". If you think he's not good enough to play there, fine, but I don't see the logic in the size argument.

The defenders in the 2nd division (as it was) were slower and Leon ran rings round them.

well, here are my entirely reasonable and considered ratings:

Blayney 8 - Very impressed with him. Good shot stopper, dodgy kicking but we are used to that and I'd rather it was that way round.

Reid 5 - Looked a bit dodgy at times
Butters 7 - Don't remember him doing much wrong
Doolan 8 - I like him. Looks like a new Danny Cullip. Exactly what we need for the rest of the season.
Harding 7 - I don't rate him normally, but I thought he had a good game yesterday.

Hart 7 - Created goal and worked socks off as usual
Oatway 5 - Nicolas is a far better player
Hammond 7 - Got stuck in, nothing inspirational. He appears to be sadly very underrated by McGhee in my opinion.
Knight 8 - OBVIOUSLY the most naturally talented player at the club. If I was him I'd bugger off in the summer to play for a manager that will play him in his correct position.

Virgo 9 - The man epitomises (sp?) this club, he took his goal like a seasoned centre forward. Embarrasses another so called professional centre forward alongside him currently. Works hard, love him.
McCammon 2 - just f*** off and stop insulting us will you, see earlier rant.

The difference from last season is that the defenders are much quicker on their feet and Leon can't use his quick feet to buy himself time and space.

Edit - I wouldn't have posted had I seen Yorkie's reply first.

Way out west
Based on yesterdays performance, what are the chances that we may keep Blayney and Dolan, along with a few others on here I reckon they performed well and would make useful additions to the squad. We may only have brought in two players on deadline day but at least they look like a decent pair.

Which is pretty much what I said in my post. I don't know if he's got the ability or not to play at this level (although I feel he has) ~ but simply saying he shouldn't be played there because he is out-muscled etc. doesn't figure for me.

I'm not saying he's the perfect striker by any means, but he offers us something we don't have in the big man/big man partnership. We're just too predictable at the moment.

Blayney : 7.5 Excellent Save from Adebola, good handling but V poor kicking. Would feel comfortable with him in the side for the rest of the season but feel his decision making may let us down in a game in the future.
Reid : 6 : Sometimes let his marker goalside and not as effective coming forward as he has been.
Dolan 4 : Limited. Done for pace and skill a couple of times, better forwards will show him up. A poor mans Danny Cullip.
Butters 8 : Shame he gave away the so called penalty, otherwise quality defending.
Harding 5 : 1 Customary mistake early on, left exposed by Leon but had trouble with their Right winger.
Hart : 6 : Good work for the goal, great work rate but too often a limited threat.
Oatway : 5 : Distribution gone backwards, protected the back four but then often proceeded to put us straight back in trouble.
Hammond : 5 : Expected better. Went missing towards the end when Cov were bossing the game
Knight : 5 : Poor game by his standards especially his dead ball play. Often double marked which didn't help.
Virgo : 8.5 : Excellent goal, worked his socks off. Unlucky to be on the losing side.
McCammon : 0 : Absolutely fcuking RUBBISH. Contributed getting offside for our dissallowed goal, a comedy push when he lost the ball and looking about as fit as a 60 year old asmatic. He cannot be defended any longer if we are to stay up.

Mcphee : 4 : one nice lay off, unlucky with squared ball to Virgo. At Fault for not tracking Staunton for Cov 2nd goal, especially with fresh legs. If I was Mcghee I would chew his ears off for that.
Jones & Nicolas : Not enough time.

Ref : 0 : Never been so angry at a decision in 20 years of watching football. Never a pen in a million years. Roll on Prosser. Apologies to anyone around me who heard my tourette's style outbursts.

We missed Chippy and dare I say Currie. See you at Preston.

It wasnt a constant criticism of McCammon like many here do, I just think right now, Virgo and Knight up front would suit me.

The problem is that Virgo won virtually no headers from balls kicked upfield by Blayney. McCammon on the other hand won most of the ones that came in his direction.

McCammon is a much greater threat in the air than Virgo. Virgo has the speed.

McCammon has the pace of a dead snail. :dunce:

He is still suffering from this inner ear problem. The reason he isn't collapsing now is because his medication has been changed.

Now cue lots of posts criticising McGhee for signing a player who has developed an illness.

Not signing in particular - I would criticise McGhee for PLAYING someone who is clearly unfit. If I was McPhee, Molongo or Robinson I would realise my days were numbered if I couldn't get in the team above someone who is 30 - 50 % fit.

That's because on yesterday's evidence, a half-fit Big Mac does contribute more to the team than McPhee.

Toad, we're going a bit round in circles here. Last week, in order to get Leon playing up front, you advocated not playing Virgs there.

But you seem to have changed your mind on that now and are backing McGhee's judgement on Virgs as a striker?

Now you are in favour of dropping Big Mac from the team to get what you want. As Big Mac has done in the past to others on this board, I think Big Mac will be handing out more portions of humble pie to his critics before this season is over.

Bigc, no spinning from me, I'm just agreeing with McGhee's current approach on selection. And I'm no spinner for McGhee either, I think Adams got one over on him tactically at the end of the game.

McGhee should have reacted quicker to what Adams did with Adebola and Benjamin. Those subs changed the game and we should have done something to counter them.

I would have been in favour of settling for a point, bringing the exhausted Big Mac off and bringing Nicolas on for a 4-5-1 with Virgs the sole outlet up front as we did with Sunderland/McCammon. We then could have strengthened a tiring midfield and Nicolas might have helped us keep possession better.
