Reasonably impressed with everyone this evening. Bennett and LuaLua were not given a great deal of space and as a result were not really in the game as much as I would have liked to have seen. Bennett did some nice little interchanges though .

Navarro, Dicker and Crofts all worked well. I thought all three were good.

Murray worked hard....he did bottle one challenge and went down a little easy.....but had he won a penalty, the shithouses on here who have given him 1-3's would be waxing lyrical. By his standards an offday but still warrants a 6 in my book.

and at this stage of the season I would like to see Forster coming on rather than Holroyd. We're not out of the woods yet and need all the experience and guile we can muster if making an attacking sub.

All 6's apart from Brezovan 7 and Elphick 8.

Brezovan - 7. Very impressive. The more I see the more I like - great handling.

Calderon - 7. Solid and offers an attacking threat. SHould have squared the ball to Murray instead of going for goal in the first half.

Painter - 6. Some shocking distribution at times and seems painfully slow. However showed great composure and was much more assured in the second half.

Elphick - 9. Immaculate performance. Dealt with the threat of Platt and Odeededjoayhghyi impeccably and looked like he wanted to get the ball down and play a lot more. Yes he hoofs the ball a fair bit, but name me a centre half in league 1 who doesn't.

El-Abd - 8. I have always said that he is a centre-half and nothing else. Finally getting an extended run in his proper position and is beginning to show his true worth to the squad. Turned to easily a couple of times but is now street-wise enough to cope.

Bennett - 6. Stop running into players. Run around them; it's that simple. Excellent set pieces.

Lua-Lua - 6. Always looks threatening but no real end product.

Navarro - 7. Does what he does best; broke up play and kept it simple.

Crofts - 7.5 - See above but an extra half mark for getting forward and helping to carve out chances.

Dicker- 8 - Thought he was excellent. Good distribution and his fair share of defence splitting passes. The one to set Calderon on goal in the first half was sublime. Hugely unlucky to be booked. That dirty gippo **** Gillespie went flying into him 2 footed.

Murray - 5 - f*** me he misses a lot of chances. If he put away half the chances he misses he would be a Premiership striker. Needs to man-up a bit when playing as a lone striker as I thought his hold up play was a bit lacking. It may sound harsh, but I think he has the potential to be a superb footballer with a slight change of mind-set.

Holroyd - 6 - Like the look of him. Quick and direct which is what we need.

Final thought; Colchester and Boothroyd are a disgrace to football. That is long ball football at it's worst and as for Gillespie's tackle, well that was truly shocking.

Great defensive performance but I have a question - it looked to me like Lualua and Bennet were pretty much marked out of the game. Isn't the theory that this should leave room for the other three in the middle to get forward more? A few times when we made breaks it did look like were were missing a midfielder attacking in the Bryan Robson style. Crofts normally does this and prospers, but he looked behind the game in the last third (eg Murray step over).

What will stop other teams doing the same and does this mean we do still need a more attacking midfield option? Or can we partially blame the pitch for nullifying Lua Lua and Beno and assume this won't happen again?

Has been quality as lone striker, ran into two lumps of centre backs who kicked/pushed/whatever they could to stop him playing. And yes he would be in premiership if he converted every chance obviously because he is quality. Some of the marks on here are a joke.

Have been testing out Gus's tactic on FM and I find the same problem. You have to have a midfielder pushing up otherwise the opposition just has to stop the wingers and you're picking up scraps.

Brezovan - 7.5 at last a keeper who commands his area by coming for crosses. Result....the centre backs look able to cope for the first time in years because they know what is their responsibility and that they have support.

Calderon - 6.5 adventurous but still a solid defender

Painter - 6.5 a proper defensive full back - you get exactly what it says on the box. Ultra reliable.

Elphick - 8 his best game in a long long time.

El-Abd - 7 solid and reliable and very vocal. lacks the height and speed to
be more than a squad player but there's nothing wrong with having people like him around.

Bennett - 6 set plays keep getting better. Playing on a beach was not going to suit his running game.

Lua-Lua - 6 stretched their defence and created space but again, the pitch was always going to be too much for him.

Navarro - 6 broke up play well but too many misplaced passes

Crofts - 6.5 just a yard off the pace because of the pitch but another solid display.

Dicker- 7- once again our most consistantly creative player.

Murray -6.5 hard to understand the extent of the criticism he gets on here. Ran his socks off on a horrid strength-sapping pitch and was bullied all night but still kept going. Exceptional defensively (you don't get that from Forster). Fell too easily once and missed a couple of half chances or he would have been close to matching Elphick's mark IMO

Holroyd - 6 this lad is going to be very useful over the next few years.

As only the second side this year (Norwich were the other) to get a clean sheet at Colchester this was a commendable display and they don't concede many at home either. The fact we were so much the better side speaks volumes for the direction that GP is taking us and the extent of his achievement already in creating a proper footballing side that can defend as a unit and still attack with pace and flair. What a change in a short space of time. Well done!

Hang on a second.....

5 is a mark for an average performance. Considering he missed two absolute sitters I think that is a fair mark.

Agreed. Too many people on here with a negative view of the team they "support".

Good point.
Last night's pitch wasn't one for attacking midfielders in fairness but I do think that with Arismendi to cover the defensive duties we will find Crofts and Dicker are released forward more quickly. That's not a reflection on Navarro who I think has been the unsung hero in turning our season round but Arismendi should have that extra class and vision to break up play and move it forward at pace.

If you came on here regularly you would know that I'm not negative inthe slightest. I gave Murray 5/10 because I thought it was an average performance. I think he is class - just needs to improve in a couple of areas.

Brezovan- 8, Commanded his box well
Calderon- 8, was outstanding getting forward and made some important clearances
Elphick- 9, MOM
El-Abd-7, Played well, mis-placed passes
Painter-7, just does enough, which is good enough
Bennett-7, Excellent set pieces, did not go past his man enough
Crofts- 7- Was solid in the middle, is a important player for us
Navarro-8, Excellent game for CDM. When we got stretched he came and provided great supporting cover, across the back four
Dicker-7, quiet but did ok
Lua-Lua-6, they man marked him out of the game
Murray-8, very clever play on his own upfront, got freekicks and 3 of their players booked. Stupid yellow card and naughty dive, but he is on his own up there

Holroyd-6, did ok

holroyd needs to release the ball sooner. he's good on it but missed some golden opportunities to release players on goal.

murray had a bad day at the office.

all in all, pleased with the performance. looking forward to next season.

Brezovan - 7 - commanded well, did not have enough saves to make to get any higher than a 7
Calderon - 7.5 - good game, solid in defence, good going forward
Elphick - 7.5 - did well against physical forwards
El-Abd - 6.5 - could of scored, but you dont expect him too, solid
Painter - 6 - not his best tonight
Bennett - 7 - good set-pieces, but no one turned them to goals
Crofts - 6.5 - did ok
Navarro 6 - gave possession away too often
Dicker - 7 - very good first half, faded in the 2nd
Lua-Lua - 6.5 - did not get the balls he wanted
Murray - 2 - yet again he prooves he is not worth 300k, he ducked when a cross came in.. would be a 1 but he came close with a header and he did a dummy, but that somes him up, a dummy.

Holroyd - not much impact

Do shut up. Murray had a shocker last night. But were you at the leeds game where he was ur best player, and Wycombe when he scored 4?
Dickinson cost 300k aswell so what do you think about him?
