Hi,

Anyone got any player ratings for last night for us exiles - i'm hearing so many mixed opinions on how well we played (apart from the defence which is unaminously ****) - can't work out whether i should be depressed or not...

Smith - 5 - good double save at the end. Maybe should have saved the first. Comedy 2nd goal again ebding up in a heap with Elphick and El Abd, with the striker free to score an open goal

El-Abd - 6 - arguably the best defender on the night. Unlucky to have be subbed. Would have taken Hoyte off and put El Abd right back

Elphick - 6 - him and Smith have serious communication issues. Was OK, but nothing brilliant

Tunnicliffe - 6 - looked good attacking, but not great at the back. Not sure why we have him taking long throws as no one wins them. Still think that was a goal

Hoyte - 4 - terrible, no great positional sense, not that great going forward

Navarro - 4 - one good turn in the middle of the pitch. Goes down looking for freekicks from fair challenges. Looked slow.

Crofts - 6 - did the donkey work playing out of position, less of a threat than normal

Dicker - 6 - good passing, looks composed as always. Gave the ball away less than normal

Bennet - 5 - playing on the left, was used to double up with El Abd on their very fast right winger. His corners were terrible, apart from one which Tunnicliffe scored from

Murray - 5 - no service. Maybe one shot on goal. Worked hard though with loads of running

Forster - 4 - carrying an injury and looked off the pace. Gave away a couple of needless fouls too. He looks like he needs a rest

Subs:
Mcnulty - did OK when he came on though he looked knackered after 10 minutes. Good going forward, looked a bit scared to tackle.

Dickinson - not much chance to do anything. He needs to get in the box when the ball is out wide as he always seems to wait on the edge of the area

Davies - barely touched the ball when he came on

Bennett - 5.5 didn't get into the game until late on
Crofts - 6
Navarro - 5.5 broke play up well but some stupid fouls that put us on the back foot
Dicker - 6 struggled with his position but some nice touches

Murray - 5.5 no service = no goals simple
Forster - 5 as above but seemed to be knackered and in need of a rest.

Dickinson - 5.5 looked for ball but still no service
McNulty - not really on long enough but gave us a outlet on the left and allowed Bennett to come back to the right
Davies - No time but does seem to scare defences because of his size and pace

Smith - 5 – Seemed more confident first half – looked like he could have saved the first but couldn’t say without a replay from a different angle – which we won’t get. Second half seemed rooted to his line for corners and crosses – didn’t help the defence out much.

El-Abd - 6 – Did well but could have been sent off after 20 mins.

Elphick - 4 – Looked shellshocked after the second goal – needs a break for a few games.

Tunnicliffe - 5 – Shares the blame for both goals with the rest of the defence – good attacking threat – hit the frame and seemed to miss a clear header second half

Hoyte - 4 – I don’t know what has happened since his suspension but he doesn’t look the same player – have we got a ringer?

Navarro - 4 – played Ok for 15 mins and afterwards was out of it.

Crofts - 6 – Won the ball but distribution wasn’t as good as previously.

Dicker - 7 – Played well and tried to setup play – was our out ball for most of the game.

Bennet - 5 - playing on the left, was used to double up with El Abd on their very fast right winger. His corners were terrible, apart from one which Tunnicliffe scored from

Murray - 6 – Won lots of ball in the air and found Forster. Looks a lot more lively following his return.

Forster - 4 – Didn’t look like he was in the game – possibly still injured.

Subs:
Mcnulty – 5 - Looks like he was brought on for a run out. Did OK and got the ball forward well.

Dickinson – 5 - tried to setup Murray and was a threat – but Charlton’s defence were very well managed and didn’t offer us anything at all.

Davies – 5 - played well for the few mins he was on. Looking for a pass and offering himself. He may have shown Poyet a way to play him – as a winger with Murray and Forster up front.

Right. I'll explain. Gary Dicker is a holding midfielder.

Holding midfielders tend to fit into two categories:

One is the gutsy, battling, tough tackling pkayer such as Owen Hargreaves or Charlie Oatway.

The other type is a more creative type of player that sits deep and tries to create attacking plays from there. Andrea Pirlo and Xabi Alonso fit this description very well.

I will remove Dicker from this analogy to avoid argument. Pirlo and Alonso are outstanding footballers but they VERY rarely directly create goals. In his Liverpool days, if Alonso played a glorious fifty yard pass to Yossi Benayoun, who then runs five yards and passes an easy square ball for Torres to score, who has had the biggest influence on the goal? Alonso clearly, but Benayoun would be credited with the assist.

There is where you totally miss the point with Dicker. His link play between the defence and the midfield is exceptional and he does it with composure and class. If he spreads the ball out wide to Dean Cox who then fucks up the cross, this is not Dicker's fault - he has still done his bit brilliantly. A prime example of this was against R & D, where Dicker came on and sprayed the ball beautifully to either flank who proceeded to do f*** all with it.

From where Dicker is usually positioned, he would have to hit inch perfect 50 yard through balls to directly set up goals, so you bemoaning his lack of assists is stupid and ignorant.

If a move that started with an excellent pass of his led to a goal 4 or 5 passes further on, his pass is still the significant one in the goal. It is still the most important ball and the best ball because without it the move would not have even started to lead to the goal.

Dicker collects the ball, traps the ball and retains the ball a million times better than anyone on our books at the moment and for me is currently Player of The Season.

I didn't criticise him at all. I gave him an average score, which wasn't even the lowest in the team.

But, ultimately, he didn't do much last night. In about the 70th minute he finally popped up with a backheel and a nice pass out wide, to which I pointed out to the person next to me that that one move alone will not only guarantee him man of the match, but will cause several NSCers to cream themselves.

Ho hum.

Tunnicliffe - 6 – Looked responsible for the first goal and was out of position a few times but in the second half put in some good challenegs. Unlucky not to score.

Hoyte - 4 – Got done for the second goal and was poor all evening.

Navarro - 6 – Didn't have that much to do but made some good tackles.

Crofts - 6 – Good work rate and tackling. Not very adventurous with his passing.

Dicker - 6 – Seemed like the only one trying to pass the ball further than 10 yards.

Bennet - 5 - Didn't get forward much and his set pieces were awful.

Murray - 6 – Won the ball in the air a lot more than usual and was good running with the ball. Final touch let him down a few times.

Forster - 4 – Wasn't in the game and was offside a few times.

I agree 100% with those marks.

He was quality throughout the first half and looked better than Charlton's centre mids but faded as the game went on. He showed some lovely touches and collected and moved the ball on in a way that Navarro and Crofts very rarely do. I don't think you appreciate the subtleties in his game, because he makes it look very easy when in reality it isn't.

I agree. He looked better on the ball than both Charlton midfielders and in the first half was without doubt the best midfielder on the pitch. I'm bewildered than some people can't see that.

All 10's, played with outstanding passion and the skill displayed in the 2nd half to keep it down to do was quite frankly fantastic
