BBC NEWS | UK | Pubs warn over plastic pints plan

Plans to replace the traditional pint glass with one made of unbreakable plastic will not be accepted by drinkers, the pub industry has warned.

The Home Office has commissioned a new design, in an attempt to stop glasses being used as weapons.

Official figures show 5,500 people are attacked with glasses and bottles every year in England and Wales.

Out of a the millions of pints served how many times is a glass used as weapon? I haven't got the figures but it must be less that 0.1% of the time. So in order to stamp out a tiny problem they're going to treat us all like hyperactive six year olds and give us safety beakers.

I know, I know, "if it saves one life ..." Jeez, they'll have us all in bed by 9:30 if they could.

Also I imagine plastic could still be dangerous if used in the wrong way.

Eg - You could still stab/cut someone with a sharp piece of plastic...

Some place I went had amazing plastic glasses - they actually felt like glass but were unbreakable.

The ordinary plastic ones are rubbish.

I think it is about right now. When I go to matches etc I don't want to but am happy-ish with plastic. But down the local pub - no reason for anything but glass.

And a straight straight glass please. Forget the anti-chip bulge.

Providing they weighed the same as glass, and didn't get as scummy as usual plastic ones, I'd just about take them but ONLY in town where nutters use them as weapons.. However in the local there is no reason whatsoever not to have glass ones.

That's what they're talking about. Not the crappy things you get at the dogs/cricket.

I'm happy to drink from them, but as others have said, there is no need in a quiet boozer - only in places where fights are likely to break out (clubs, etc.). I also dislike the mid-range plastic ones that look like pint gallses, but don't feel like them or weigh as much.

If I have to drink from plastic, its to-of-the range for me (unless i'm already drunk, in which case I'll drink from anything!).

i wonder when these people will realise that its their constant interference in peoples lives, unnecessary regulation and legislation, might have in some small way contributed to a society that is wound up, uptight and angry.

Social convention and mores ebb and flow, its not one long road to improvement. I think history will look on this current period as draconian, restrictive, and one that produced an unhappy society, for all its health or wealth. f***ing hell how much more boring, pointlessly policed and nannyish has even the last 10 years been?

I voted Glass, but they have plastic ones at Glastonwick so no glass gets broken to help protect the sheep.

So if plastic ones are developed furthur all the better, perhaps we may get the logos back on them.

I totally agree. Just to continue my statistics theme the BBC says 126 million pints are served every week, and yet there are only 5,500 attacks EACH YEAR with glasses AND bottles. Assuming that every single one of those attacks was with a pint glass and absolutely nobody got hit with a bottle then every time you buy a pint there's a 0.000000839% chance that your glass could be used as a weapon (give or take the odd point for my maths). I'm sorry but that is just not a problem and is simply not worth adressing with a blanket ban on glass drinking vessels.

As DKM and others have said the balance now is about right. If the venue generally expects a high percentage of pissed up wankers then treat them like children and serve the beer in plastic. If it's a gathering of civilized adult human beings then leave the f*** alone. (They can't though can they?)

FFS, do they need to Commission a new design? it's a glass FFS, it has a hole in the top, a little bulge down the sides, and it is transparent. If you look in the yellow pages under plastic you'll find your material supplier and vacuum moulders, and there you go.

Why the hell do they have to "commission" a new design, oh, yeah, forgot, it's probably going to be a quanggo with cross party implications and a need for site visits to plastic glass makers in Cancun, Fiji and the Seychelles, not forgetting the expenses claims.

I know they're just numbers, but you try telling that to the poor bastard who's just copped a face full of glass...

I would be happy with good heavy duty plastics in clubs/bars in Brighton tbh.
