Has anyone else noticed the 83 cup final replica shirt in the club shop is the Phoenix Brewery kit? Surely it was the British Caledonian kit?

I thought it was the British Caledonian shirt but without the large sponsor on it, as it was being shown live on the BBC and they were not allowed to advertise?

I know we didn't have it on the kit for the final, but BC sponsored us that season?

maybe it wasnt allowed on tv back in the day, as in '83 i think man utd had a sharp sponsin kit, perhaps it was different just for fa cup?

No that's not right. The kit we wore in the cup final in '83 was a unique one off and not the British Caledonian which we wore 81-83 or the Phonex Brewery kit we wore from 83-85 although the design was very very similar. The main difference to my recollection was that the cup final kit was blue with white pin stripes whereas the Phoenix Brewery one was white and red pinstripes.

From the picture above it looks like you are correct.

Didn't we do something similar for the 1991 playoff final? Turned up in the next seasons away kit?

There were no pinstripes of any colour on the cup final shirt. Also, are the shirts in the shop being sold as cup final shirts (I think not) and are they just the shirts for the following season with Phoenix sponsoring us and the reference to 83 cup final around the badge is just a commemoration of the event of the previous season. Bit like the gold stars international teams have on their shirts.

Over there
The 1st football kit I was bought was the phoenix breweries kit and i wore it proudly in p.e at school in 84 or 85. Looking at the photo above I couldn't remember the one off kit, i dont remember the pinstripes. I thought it was the regular British Caledonian kit. I remember like it was yesterday watching cup final build up which started in the morning with sandy toksvig in "number 73" Wish I could go back, happy times.

Blue shirt, red and white pin stripes, was worn for the first time in the '83 cup final (without sponsor name - as per photo above !).
I think the same shirt, with Phoenix Brewery, was worn the following season.
The British Caledonian shirt (silky with Harry Hill collar) was worn throughout the 82 - 83 season, but was replaced especially for the cup final.

Not surprised that there is confusion! I hope this answers it...

shirts4.jpg

1. Plain blue shirt with flared collar and 'British Caledonian' sponsor was worn during 1982/83 season.*
2. White and red pinstripes on blue shirt with plain V-neck and 'British Caledonian Airways' sponsor was worn in pre-match publicity photos before FA Cup Final.
3. White and red pinstripes on blue shirt with plain V-neck and no sponsor was worn during both Cup Final matches. *
4. White and red pinstripes on blue shirt with V-neck with blue and red trim and no sponsor was worn from start of 1983/84 season up to October.
5. White and red pinstripes on blue shirt with V-neck with blue and red trim and first version of the 'Phoenix Brewery' sponsor was worn from October 1983 for rest of the season and in 1984/85.
6. This variation of the 'Phoenix Brewery' logo was worn in 1984/85.
7. This variation of the 'Phoenix Brewery' logo was worn in 1984/85.

* In 1982/83, matches broadcast on terrestrial TV sports programmes required teams to wear shirts without sponsor logos.

I have tried to provide a link for some pics but need 25 posts !
Will go and leave some short replies on other threads and return shortly !
