Does anybodyknow where I can find a listing of Uni's that do PGCE' s or where I can find a course listing for them?

The three local ones are Brighton, Sussex and Chichester. Did mine at Chichester whilst commuting from Hove. The one with the worst reputation is Sussex, the best Brighton, Chichester is somewhere in the middle. I went to the latter because it is small and likely to get a bit more support than the larger universities. Chichester is also limited to what subjects you can take your PGCE in.

What level do you intend to teach (Primary, Secondary) and what subject do you intend to teach?

Get across to gttr.ac.uk, they list all the PGCE places, and it's them that you have to apply through. I start mine in January, it's for Primary.....so I will be teaching the youth of the UK in their most formative years.

Worried? I would be.....

Why don't you try teaching in a fee-paying school to see if you like it and/or have aptitude. That way you get to do the teaching without having to do most of the nonsense that goes with it. Also, if you do like it your children (should you be allowed them) can usually get around 80% off the fees.

Edit: Should have added that you don't need a PGCE then. You could always do one if you did like it and wanted to risk your sanity in the state sector.

If your avatar is anything to go by I think you'll make a marvellous teacher.

Are there still grants for PGCE? I think someone from Homerton College, Cambridge (our feeder uni for students) mentioned that over 2/3rds of PGCE graduates leave the profession after 3 years, so make sure you get the grant.

I'm jealous, I had to pay for my extra year as a BEd but that was way back when there were no fees and I had a grant (yes remember those?) albeit £200 a year.

Good choice of course Hampshire Seagull, I've been teaching in the primary sector for nine years and love the teaching. Unfortunately I have promotion to management now so I will become bitter and twisted with no time to enjoy myself or teach due to paperwork. ;)

Grants galore! Once the Student Loan company have finished chucking money at me, I will be on about £12K just for studying (the course fees are taken care of with a student loan, repayable at 25p every 6 months or something stupid...)! Plus the £6K bursary, I'll only have to take on some minor shelf stacking work at Asda to keep the Mrs in the stlye to which she is accustomed. Let's not tell her about the £7K military pension that I also get, shall we?! As for the tax free lump sum of £40K (give or take a few K), not a bad little start for a 40 year old, is it? Should keep the kids out of chimney-sweeping for a few more years.

Primary teaching really appeals to me - dealing with people who have the mental age which matches their actual age will be a huge step forward for me!

Yes and watch Dead Poets Society or goodbye Mr Chips. During my PGCE saw the worse teaching at a fee-paying school. Smug, useless, elitist wankers the lot of them. I did my PGCE at the Institute of Education (University of London), teach in Thamesmead and love it.

Leave the fee paying schools to the old and uninspiring….yes I am a reverse snob!!

Just to put you straight Les, in case you have any illusions - you cannot demand to only teach sixth form girls PE.

Whats that? You can?

Where is this course again?
