When i go to Brighton from Littlehampton its 'into town'
But when i go up to London i say 'up to London'

Does this mean i'm a faliure of epic proportions & should throw myself in the river Arun?

It's 'up' to London in all directions (i.e. someone from Cambridge goes 'up' to London) as the old railway nomenclature states that Up is in the direction of London. It's carried over from that. It would only be 'down to Brighton' if you are on a journey that could feasibly start in London. In any other direction - knock yourself out, it's whatever you feel comfy saying.

Anyway that's the guys who work on QI told me - I could be wrong.

Interesting, but I can't understand how anyone who is travelling in a southerly direction can possibly think they're going upwards!? It just makes zero sense.

Equally zero sense, why would anyone travelling in a northerly direction be going 'up', unless maybe they were in a balloon !

Comedy is correct, it is based on the railways and the up line and the down line. Trains running towards London are normally referred to as Up trains, and those away from London as Down.

Doesn't explain why everyone applies this illogical rule to their own town/city, eg my Manc housemate says going down to Manchester from here and vice versa.

Because they are going thru London perhaps, hence from Manc it is up to London and then down to Brighton

When I lived in South Wales, we went "to London" and we came "back from London". Neither up nor down.

If there was ever a reason to go "up" somewhere, it was usually a trip up the valleys. Ebbw Vale or Tredegar, for example.

I could (sort of) understand that if they were travelling to London only. The way I see it;

If I'm going from here to the North Pole, I'm travelling UP to the top of this planet. I'm travelling in a northerly direction, ending in a position higher UP, at the TOP of this planet. On a greater scale, I am higher up in space.

My brain aches now :shrug:

It looks to me like London is about to fall off the edge of Danny's world.
