We really need to do the thing a few teams do where someone pretends to be the penalty taker, stands up there with the ball and lets the goalie psych them and just before the pen they hand the ball over to whoever is really taking it. Krul got in Neal’s head and it was all over.

That's exactly what I said after the miss. Let someone else (other than the real penalty taker) stand there and deal with the keeper's mind games, then handover to the real penalty taker. Makes absolute sense. Why has no team done that ... that I'm aware of?

And there should be a rule that the goalie has to stand on his line from the moment the penalty is awarded, otherwise yellow card..

That's unusually low and will probably even out, the normal rate over a season is just under 80pc (and the xG for a Premier League pen is 0.79, ie. implies 79pc success rate).

That said, missing three out of eight isn't that extraordinary, given that the chance of any individual miss is 4.7 (and you can't miss/score half a penalty).

Terrible penalty.

Potter needs to take some blame for this….. “Who’s on penalties” Maupay, “I am”, at that point Potter or any of his team should have stepped in. Maupay has a poor record with pens and is off form - no way should he have taken that….. somebody else might’ve missed as well, but like many others I had no confidence in Neal…..

The problem is we’re not exactly blessed with clean ball strikers and precision shooters. I’m not sure March would even reach the goal line.

They have. I read article about it and think it was Liverpool or maybe Chelsea??

Big Bob Sanchez to take penalties.

1. He's got the temperament.
2. Penalty taking GKs screams south American flair.
3. No groans when he misses as we're all panicked by the empty goal.

Brilliant.

As to point 3, couldn't help but laugh today. It had a certain inevitability about it but it was quite a spectacular miss. Rotten afternoon for Neal.

After cheering the penalty award I turned to my son and said "Don't know why I'm cheering .... we're going to miss."

Maupay needs shipping out - he's not PL quality. Was all over the place today - often out of position and unable to keep up with players like Cucurella and Welbeck.

Worse than the penalty miss was the way it impacted him afterwards, head dropped and no belief, or fight.

In the East Upper we were betting (not literaly) on where the ball would hit. The Irish Flag, other flag above it, 10th row of away supporters, cameraman, adverts above away end, over the roof and saved by Krul. Only one person in around 12 said back of the net.

MacAllister, Trossard are more obvious choices.

I was literally staggered to see Maupay stepping up after his previous attempts…

Lopez and Vicente never missed a penalty for us and never looked like missing.
Ahhh, forgot about Spanish Dave, yes and his freekicks were delicious. The St Patrick's Day one being the best imo.

Vicente was a luxury player, and he was only ever half fit, but boy what a player. The Derby game where he mugged about 6 of their players and shot just over the bar was magic.

They have now been added to my list.

Not forgetting we are shooting against the best keepers in the world, but hitting the target helps !!

When the penalty was given, I quickly pulled out a cigarette and went outside for a smoke in order to ready myself for the disappointment. Tim Krul has one of the best penalty records on the planet while the confidence in the Brighton camp is not exactly on top. Rather than the usual 3 in 4 or 4 in 5 pen ratio that is normal I felt there was like a one in five chance Brighton would score from it (regardless of taker tbh, though might have been a wee bit more hopeful if Ali Mac took it).
