PC help needed - serious error message

If he can get into the bios the computer is not dead, it will probably
be windows corrupt or bad sectors on the hard drive.
Pm me your mates phone number and i will ring him.

the first thing that springs to mind is the CPU is too hot. open up the case and fire it up, check the fan is running. other than that its pretty vague, only other thing that might get damaged permantly is the hard disk, maybe try that in another machine or another HD in this machine to see what happens?

When he turns on the computer, he can gert as far as selecting how you want to start the computer, ie, safe mode, last working configuration etc..., whichever is selected, he gets the windows logo with the bar underneath for about 1 second before the blue screen appears

the full message that appears is:
Problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer
disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or back-up utilities, check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run chkdsk /f to check for hard drive corruption, then restart your computer.

Tech info

when retried, got all same codes except 0x82b4c828 instead of 0x82bed800)

does this mean anything to anyone?

It happens when the computer is first turned on, you can hear the fan running, and does seem to get louder after a shortish period of time, if that gives anyone a clue whats up.

Initial guess is that the file system is corrupt: This issue can occur if a problem occurred within the Ntfs.sys file. The Ntfs.sys file is the driver file that enables your computer to read and write to NTFS partitions. Damage in the NTFS file system, damaged portions of your hard disk, or damaged SCSI or IDE drivers can also cause this issue.

I googled the above and it seems to be a fairly common problem and everyone seems to have to restore factory settings. Seems to be linked to anti-virus software downloaded.

I've had similar issues in the past, I just format my hard drive and reinstall windows.. If you can get the xp recovery disks from somewhere, he might have a sticker with his product key?

Just found this:

"I contacted Microsoft and the problem is a common one...when I downloaded the service pack, Norton Antivirus was running. She said that Microsoft and Norton are having a lot of problems right now and the best way to prevent this is to uninstall any antivirus programs you have before downloading anything from Microsoft-mainly service packs.

The lady said that about 3,000 people do this every day and it is easy to fix. www.microsoft.com, search for xp home or xp professional floppy disk boot, then download it onto 6 floppy disks. I have not yet downloaded onto the floppy disks because this computer I am using doesn't have a floppy drive.

I will have to do it tomorrow after work. Anyway, this should fix the problem WITHOUT SYSTEM RESTORE!!!!!!!!!!"

I've seen this numerous times, albeit each time is slightly different, but I don't anticipate any problems this time. :)

I'm a freelance I.T. support person with 10 years experience of fixing all manner of computer problems.

I had a similar message so I phoned PC World performance they said it was a fault on the hard drive not being read properly man is coming out on Tuesday morning to fix it FOC.

Assuming you bought it from PC World and is still in warranty!

If not, they would charge you circa £60/hour which is a lot more than I would charge to probably do a better job.

I think anybody could do a better job than PC World but when I bought the machine 2 years ago I took out cover plan. I phoned them tonight to check and they said it was covered by the plan.

Had new hard drive ftted no problem but quoted £99.99 to retreive the data from the old one. Apparently the machine used to get it is expensive. Decided against it as I copy nearly everything.
