Paxman On Fire

Why are you lefties always so cynical when the Government decides that it would now be better not to adopt a LABOUR idea of increasing the fuel duty.

Is it better for the Government to react to events or to stick to pre-conceived ideas all the way from 2010 to 2015?
Sorry ... but the fuel duty escalator was a policy first introduced by the Major government in 1993.

I feel sorry for the coalition MPs who'd been told to defend the decision NOT to scrap the rise, right up until a few hours before the U-turn, i.e. Justine Greening gave an interview on Monday setting out why the increase would have to be brought in as scheduled.

The bit I liked about the Chloe Smith interview was right at the end where, having owned her, he sarcastically thanked her for coming, casually swivelled in his chair and moved on to the next item as though nothing had happened. Meanwhile, you could see Ms Smith gulping down the water and staring into space as she contemplated the bloody remains of her career. It was the TV equivalent of political rape.

What is your recommended Plan B? Another (Ed) Ballsup of epic proportions or some sound economic planning?

What my plan wouldnt be is to dress up the same politically idealised policies that every previous Tory government has used to pay for tax cuts in order to buy votes come election time (cut funding to the NHS, public sector etc), as remedies to a supposed massive debt problem. Particularly when half of Europes economies have been brought to their knees by such measures, and you have pushed the country back into recession by implementing them and being to thick to realise that they havent worked or too ashamed to come out and admit that they havent worked and werent put in place for the reason that you said they were.

I would think a plan that involved creating more jobs, thus increasing spending and tax paying would be beneficial to the country rather than one that puts people out of work, therefore stops their tax paying and their spending power, thus leading to more job losses and higher benefit payments.

Left or right ......who gives a shit? Most politicians are complete TOSSERS.

What was brilliant was an out of touch career politician being held to account and then exposed as useless.

Paxman maybe an arrogant bully but when he gives politicians a hard time IT MAKES ME HAPPY.

So your plan B is the Brown/Balls plan. God help us all.

What is the government doing? People switched from Labour in droves at the last election and they are all now wondering whether they have made a mistake. Five u-turns in such a short time is just ridiculous and totally indefensible. Poor Chloe Smith probably thought she could show her colours by stepping up to the plate but she should never have been given the chance. In all this there is absolutely nothing good for the Conservatives... its a disaster. Yes Paxman went for the jugular but thats his job and I really dont think anybody would have expected him to behave differently.

Im not ın the UK so Im not commenting on the fuel duty rise but whatever government you have you expect it to stick to the policies and budgets it promised.

I think there is a real possibility that the next election will witness the largest number of non-voters in modern history.

I wonder if Paxman is nice and charming before the interview so as to put his guest at their ease or is it that they don't meet him until virtually on air?

She certainly was a sacrificial lamb and I don't think Paxo really had to break sweat on this one. he toyed with her, easy, easy!

It was painful to watch how that little flower was pulled apart petal by petal and then stamped on by Paxman. The Tories will never let her go in front of Paxman again.

What is amazing is that she had already been eviscerated once by Krishnan Guru-Murthy earlier in the day on C4 news and the Tories still sent her back out to face Paxman. Poor kid.

Exactly. She's a kid. At 43 I don't mind that managers are younger than me, but really, I do want people running this country to have less of the young and intellectually trendy about them, and more wisdom that comes with years of life!

How she got her job? - Chloe and Cam | The Waugh Room | | PoliticsHome

You'd think that the Coalition, being formed from two parties - even those two parties - would have a deep enough pool of talent to pick from not to need to promote nonentities like Chloe Smith so far beyond their competence. But when you look at Cameron and Osborne, you see the sort of jumped-up management types who are scared to give anyone of any ability a job in case they make them look bad.

You think for a second Cameron is going to risk going in front of Paxman? Not a chance. He's a coward.

Thanks for that, I'd forgotten that little gem had Paul Higgins in it as well as Peter Capaldi - what joy.

And yes, that's how Chloe Smith was

Much as that interview is hilarious, I'm not convinced by this to be honest. Ultimately she has been hung out to dry by all of the treasury politicians after yet another u-turn. Would Osborne or anyone else have made a better job of answering Paxman? This government are giving a good impression of a bunch of fuckwitts, making policy u-turns every five minutes. They announce they are going to make cuts here and there, and then backtrack a month later - how is the public supposed to PLAN in this environment?

I agree with this. I watched it and thought she held her ground quite well. A lot of people would have just crumbled. She is just a puppet for Cameron and Osborne and Paxo bullied her relentlessly really, no more than that. If the camera's were not there she would have been justified in telling him to f*** right off and give him a slap.

Paxo just kept asking the same questions he knew she did not have the authority to answer and she just repeated her answers. Paxo is just a bully really. Some people he owns and sometimes he is owned himself.

I am quite old fashioned in that I think there is a way you should speak to and treat a lady regardless and found the whole thing rather uncomfortable. I doubt if Paxo's Mother was very proud of him.

If she did not have the authority to be there, why was she?

Osborne is not only an arroagant failure, but a coward as well.

Utter shambles.

Good grief. I didn't know there were people who still think like that.

She put herself up as a politician. She receives a salary as a politician. He therefore addressed her as a politician, not as 'a lady' (however that line of questioning supposed to manifest itself)

She did crumble. Everyone else saw it.
