I watched the whole race live, and I have a marathon pb of 2-56 myself. Most people who didnt watch wont realise that Radcliffe was actually well in contention (in the lead chasing group) until about 20 miles when sadly she started to fall apart.

She and anybody who knows anything about marathon running knew it was very unlikely she could do anything so soon after a major injury, but with it being just a once in 4 year chance (and possibly even her last ever chance) it was well worth giving it a go.

Even if she did risk worsening the injury she still has 4 years to recover and prepare for London 2012.

I think with Paula it was a matter of principle and pride after dropping out 4 years ago. Most Doctors thought she would not even start let alone finish and she ran 26.2 miles 3 months after breaking her leg in very hot and sultry conditions. What did you do yesterday, have a few pints and a burger ?.

Radcliffe has been a sporting LEGEND for thic Country and does not need to prove anything to anyone.

Think 'sultry' is possibly the wrong word, but agree with the rest of your statement wholeheartedly.

She is an amazing athlete, full stop.

I read a newspaper article after the 2004 Olympics that implied one of the reasons for her failure at the Olympics was due to her deviating from the training plan to compete in a race where she had been offered a large fee, may have been the New York or Chicago marathon. I've looked online for this but can't find it. I remember thinking if it was true, I've got no sympathy for her.

This time round, medical opinion was saying she shouldn't run. She hadn't been able to train enough and there were risks. She admitted in an interview she hadn't had enough time to train.

Question is is she a brave athlete or is she selfish for taking a place when unfit that someone else could have had? Someone who could have used it as valuable experience for the next Olympics?

Firstly having run a marathon myself (3hr 21min) I take my hat off to anyone else who has completed the distance. Secondly Paula is a fantastic runner and athlete. I'm not really interested in whether she is brave or selfish and she certainly isnt after anyone's sympathy.
