Seeing as she's just run 26 miles with a stress fracture - frankly, Yes she is. What have you done recently?

isn't that more STUPID than brave

and no, i've not ran any marathon's, but then again it's not my JOB........i just can't stand the mentality in this country where by if someone fails then they're 'brave', or even worse, in this olympics 'building for 2012'

What did you do yesterday, have a few pints and a burger ?.

do i have to be able to run a marathon to criticise then? or did i have to run a marathon YESTERDAY? what if i ran a marathon on friday? could i take the piss then?

all those times you criticised dean wilkins, had you managed a professional football team THAT DAY?

no, of course you hadn't

I think she's enormously brave but for all that she remains a victim of expectations since it is clearly not sensible to run a marathon with a stress fracture that hasn't healed properly.

BY THE WAY- i'm more having a go at the media than radcliffe

i accept that running a marathon is pretty f***ing hard, but i'd imagine radcliffe more than anyone would consider coming 23rd to be somewhat of a failure

i just can't stand the way our press hate winners and love losers

I haven't seen the what the English press have said about her but Steve & Brendan were playing down her chances yesterday big time. The Chinese producers however paid more attention to Paula than to the eventual winner - I think this is probably due to the fact that she holds the the world record that is most likely not ever to be beaten and has proven herself over & over again to be world class.

I like the way we like losers and are not so keen on winners in this country (many of us anyway), otherwise we would all be supporting Chelsea & ManUre and football clubs like ours would cease to exist.

Lastly I think on this occasion you cannot class Paula as a loser, as already said she ran the Marathon with a stress fracture - something whether stupid or brave NOBODY else would have been able to do. Although you're right when you say that she herself would be disappointed as she has the highest standards and anything less than Gold is deemed a failure.

football is slightly different as many people (historically) support their local team, so it has little to do with success (this has changed somewhat recently however)

and the definition of a 'loser' is someone who fails to win, therefore in this case i most certainly can class her as a loser, but like you said, she has been world class in the past and does demand respect, and i must take my hat off to her for trying to compete while recovering from injury, yet if her main aim was to finish a race.......?

anyway, well done to yamauchi, as laura said, many people seem to have forgotten about her

I think it's ridiculous that we're focusing on Paula, when one of our runners came 6th today!!!

Yeah, she ran a brilliant race but I think she is not being focused on much for 2 reasons.

Firstly she didn't win a medal, granted she done well but the public wont remember the 6th placed person however good the race was ran.

Secondly, I think it is because she lives in Japan and is called Yamasaki (or something like that) that we aren't focusing on her.

But then we're focusing on paula because she came last!!!

I think Paula Radcliffe had something to prove as she got a lot of criticism when she pulled up in 2004 about whetrher she would have done the same if there was a cash prize at stake rather than a medal. At about 25 km she looked like the one who would attack the Romanian but her legs just gave in.

True but I think thats because of who she is and the injury that she was racing with.

Same with Liz Yelling, I'm only guessing here but I reckon she will get just as much attention as Mara and she finished 26th or thereabouts. Reason being is that she had a nasty fall and ran most of the race with a cracked rib and some nasty grazes.

I suppose the point is, a normal runner coming 6th in The Marathon with no mitigating circumstances is not as newsworthy as a world record holder running The Marathon with a stress fracture.
