He did say that he felt that players, given a choice, wouldn't want to come to Wigan - Andy Johnson being the example he used.

Must admit that if I was offered a Premiership contract with Wigan I wouldn't be tempted. Rugby league town that has the worst supported team in the Premiership. Most Championship clubs do better than Wigan in terms of supporter numbers. Not an attractive prospect for any ambitious player, even a mediocre Emile Heskey being there seems a bit of an odd one.

Jewell resigns as Wigan manager

Paul Jewell has resigned as Wigan boss - 24 hours after saving the Premiership club from relegation on the final day of the season. Wigan confirmed to BBC North West that the 42-year-old had left his post. His exit comes after the drama of beating Sheffield United 2-1 on Sunday to ensure Wigan's top-flight status.

Jewell has been linked with Manchester City where manager Stuart Pearce is under threat with a new consortium bidding to take over the club. Jewell joined Wigan in June 2001 from Sheffield Wednesday. He guided The Latics to the League One title in 2002-03 and in 2004-05 they finished runners-up to Sunderland in the Championship to reach the top flight for the first time in their history.

Under Jewell, Wigan surprised many pundits by surviving comfortably in their first season, finishing 10th and also reaching the Carling Cup final. Previously, Jewell had taken Bradford into the Premiership and helped them a similar last-day survival for the Bantams. Wigan chairman Dave Whelan offered Jewell a job for life at the JJB Stadium outfit last year but also said he would not stand in his way if he had an offer from a bigger club.

oh well, Wigan are a nothing club, gutted that they didn't go down.

What an attitude! So, only the "big" fashionable clubs with their predominantly journeymen overpaid prima donnas deserve to be in the Premiershite. Wigan got there by results, if they subsequently obtain enough points to stay up, they have just as much right to be there as the bigwigs. I know what sort of team I'd rather support and it's not one of the big four.

Those of you who know me, know that I do some scouting for Paul Jewell and know him quite well. He made his decision a week ago and told Whelan last Wednesday that win or lose he was off. Whelan obviously tried to change his mind, but he feels he has taken Wigan as far as he can for the reasons lots of you are stating on here - no one wants to sign, (Johnson would have been on £2000 more a week at Wigan, but went to Everton)lack of crowds etc...
Contrary to popular opinion, he has not been offered the City job and wants to have a summer holiday. Whether he will return as City manager is, in my opinion, a real doubt.

I see Wigan have appointment Chris Hutchings as Jewell's successor.

Bradford did exactly the same thing when Jewell left them, after keeping them up on the last day of the season.

Spooky.

wasn't Hutchings a disaster?

They appear to be suggesting health issues are what lead to his resignation.
