Versatile Gross puts Blades to sword​

For all the eye-catching wing-wizardry of Simon Adingra and Kaoru Mitoma, it was yet another Pascal Gross masterclassat the heart of Brighton’s Sunday dismantling of Sheffield United. Versatile enough to play in midfield before the break and at right-back after it, Gross completed 110 passes and created eight chances for his teammates. One such chance was a cross for Adringa that landed Gross, signed seven years ago for just £3m, his ninth league assist of the season. No one has bettered that tally for Brighton in a Premier League campaign. “I’m not surprised, because Pascal is a top player,” said Roberto De Zerbi when that statistic was put to him. “Pascal is important in terms of performances but mentality as well. “On paper, it may look like Gross had just the one assist, but this was legitimately one of the best single-game performances of any player in European football this season – if not THE best.

“Look at the numbers. Gross had eight key passes and nine accurate crosses, completing an absolutely absurd 97 per cent of his passes on a total of 113 passing attempts. That is a historically great passing day.

The placement of his corners has improved enormously. That always seemed a strange weakness for someone so clinical, but now they are in the right place, at the right speed. Just need to train our centre-backs in how to head to the side of the keeper now. (yes - I know Dunk scored with an excellent header - but we could have had three in the first half).

It’s not just his corners though, it’s every aspect of his game that keeps getting better and better. He’s phenomenal.

I know he’s got a bit more recognition from the wider football world recently but isn’t it amazing to think that we are watching one of the best midfielders in the world every week at Brighton and the vast majority of football fans don’t know it! He is a world class footballer.

I’m astonished by the level of play and consistency he’s reached over the last couple of years.

Truthfully, I thought he had an average-to-poor game yesterday for his standards. Yet he always has that bit of quality others lack to create something in a split second.

His passing was poor at times and he was caught in possession a few times - despite that he created everything good going forward. His cross which nearly found Buonanotte then his assist were both just moments of brilliance that he produces even when slightly off the pace.

Didn’t help that he was carrying Gilmour who was very poor yesterday.
