Not many 'casual' Stranglers fans could name a song after Golden Brown

And Hugh left 8 years after that came out

Like most bands it's a downward spiral from their early stuff

The Stranglers released Dark Matters last year and considering it's well over 40 years since their 1st,it's very respectable

They have just finished a UK tour, which was a 'final' tour as a tribute to Dave Greenfield, endorsed by his wife

Very polished and professional, very emotional for 'hardcore' Stranglers fans

Actually probably more professional than the Mk1 version

But that is by no means to say it was better,Mk1 gigs were all rawness and attitude

I abandoned the Stranglers myself when Hugh left,it took me 20 years to go and see them again

Baz Warne has actually been in the Stranglers longer than Hugh

Hugh has been absent longer now, than he was actually in the band

Sorry about the rant, but the Stranglers for me are up there with Brighton & Hove Albion

The only 2 things that mattered to me for many years was

Brighton's fixture list & Ths Stranglers tour dates

The debate of whether they still are 'The Stranglers' has and continues to be done to death on a Stranglers forum

Each case is different with many histrionics

I think you need to be attached emotionally to a band,to have some sense of what has gone on

And for that reason,I wouldn't even to begin to question other people's loyalty to other bands

Again,sorry for the rant

Up the Albion & long live The Stranglers !

Great post. I feel your passion.

I feel slightly guilty now...I was a huge Stranglers fan who abandoned them, completely, after Hugh left.

I've been tempted to return, but have never done so.

You have made me quite jealous.

Good information rather than a rant IMO

I know obviously they are your favourite band, in my early / mid teens I didn’t really have a favourite band, or it changed every week :) I would say a lad I knocked around with at the time and his favourite band were definitely The Stranglers.
I did like them and as mentioned before, i saw them live a few times, for years though I probably have only listened to the old stuff I liked back then.

Just never really thought about wanting to see them without Hugh, same with The Jam, I got asked to go and see From The Jam a few years ago and wasn’t bothered.

Probably doesn’t make sense that my first gig was JJ on the Euroman Cometh tour

Anyone seen The Undertones without Fergal?
I know they played in Brighton recently.

Yes, at The Concorde 10 or so years ago. Musically, they were as great as they always were and the singer was ok but wasn't a patch on Feargal.

My favourite ever gig was the Undertones at the Suite in 1980/81. It lasted 2.5 hours which included a bomb scare and evacuation and they were terrific.

I saw That Petrol Emotion at Brighton Poly (?) a few years later and they were decent but not a patch on the 'Tones. Must dig out Hypnotised and give it a spin tomorrow. Utterly brilliant!

I was reading about them today and saw they played at Chalk in Brighton on St Patrick’s Day, supported by Hugh Cornwell.
Always loved their sound and not surprised you thought they were great musically.

As with all these things, "it depends".

Some bands, for example Motorhead, Hawkwind, Angel Witch, only exist with one particular member. The rest can change but without that lead they aren't the same band.

Some bands, for example Pink Floyd, just mutate as the personnel change. It helps that Floyd don't have an obvious lead vocal.

Then there are bands like AC/DC, which I think of as two different bands just because they have a different vocalist. Deep Purple is at least five differnet bands by the same logic.

I did see the 1990s Bucks Fizz, which was indistinguishable from the original, at Butlins on the same weekend with Freddie and a whole bunch of new Dreamers (see Motorhead comment above).

They really were great fun and, apart from Feargal, never took themselves too seriously.

The O'Neill brothers could certainly write a tune or 6 and, given their upbringing in Derry, I can't recall any of their songs referring to The Troubles; they were mostly about teenage angst and boy meets girl stuff which resonated with this 16 year old in 1980.

I played Tearproof after posting last night and all the memories came flooding back. It still sounds as good as it did back then which is a testimony to their skilful song writing. I love them to bits!

Not sure if you use Twitter but there is a link on The Undertones website, there are 2 newspaper stories on the Twitter page, definitely worth a read.

Harry, we were in the office talking about bands (and specifically rising ticket prices) i just thought I'd put it out there. Personally I've grown to love the Beach Boys over the last few years but as previously stated wouldn't pay £80 to see Mike Love and his backing band, however if offered a ticket for the Stones 60th anniversary tour will go.

Each to their own old love.

Hopefully see you at the Goldstone 25th dinner?

PS At least Steps have stayed intact?

Yes, apologies for being an irritable old git :lolol:

As has already been pointed out, your comment about Human League is questionable. I’d also say that Bon Scott is very different, both vocally and especially lyrically, than Brian Johnson. There’s a certain wit and cleverness to Scott’s lyrics which Johnson has never had.

Did you see them with Scott at the Top Rank? Great gig. When the geordie joined I jogged on.

To me, this is when they stopped being the Human League. I loved them when Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh (who started the band - Oakey joined later) were there, before the bust up that led these two to form Heaven 17.

I quite like the incarnation you mention, but they, sort of, nicked the name!

I saw the original Human League in London (the gig where I saw Eno and spoke to Bowie ). Oddly, although I loved them I thought we got more than double our money when they spawned the exceptional Heaven 17 and the lovely poptastic Oakey Human League.

Slade still tour, but Dave Hill is the only original member left. How can they be Slade without Noddy Holder? Ludicrous...

I don't listen to the Band of the Coldstream Guards any more because they don't have any of their original members.

saw The Specials at the Brighton Centre about 10 years ago. Had all the original members minus Jerry Dammers of course. Was pretty fun, played all the hits etc. Too young to have seen them in their first spell so you'd have to ask an older fan about how authentic it was

only Terry, Horace and Lynval remain for their recent tours and releases which seems very diluted to me

Didn’t Noddy and Jimmy Lea go to court to make sure Dave Hill’s act was billed as ‘Slade 2’? ( I think Hill still had Don Powell on drums at that time)

Well, they are 'Slade' again now.

From Wikipedia:
Slade II was formed in 1992 by Hill with Powell and three other musicians - Craig Fenney (bass), Steve Makin (guitar) and Steve Whalley (lead vocals and guitar). The suggestion to call the group Slade II came from Holder, but Lea was not happy with the Slade name being used at all. The group's name was only shortened to Slade again ten years later
