When is a band not a band?

Do Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend represent a Who gig?

But if Paul and Ringo played with a backing band would you call that The Beatles?

Do only 2 of the original Stones still carry the same gravitas?

Can Mike Love and a stage of session musicians really call themselves The Beach Boys and charge £80 at the Brighton Centre?

Or is life too short, and everyone deserves to make a living?

The Stranglers only have JJ left from the original line up, I’ve read that they are still very good but I’m glad I saw the band with the original line up a few times.

Then there's 10cc which is Graham Gouldman and some other blokes currently touring......
Supposed to be very good, but people not thinking it's right because there is no Eric Stewart, and others thinking it's not right because there is no Godley and Creme........

Hawkwind have had a very long and reasonably (for a space/psychedelic rock band) successful career, and they changed members pretty much every other day, the only constant being Dave Brock.
I've also seen Wishbone Ash (original 4 band members) and the current, Andy Powell incarnation and I really didn't notice the difference.

In the case of 10cc, quite a of few of their biggest hits were after Godley and Creme left.

When Mick Jones left The Clash, that was it. They limped on but were suddenly awful, rather than the godlike geniuses they had been previously.

When Graham Coxon left Blur they released Think Tank, which was a superb album.

I couldn't get on with The Stranglers after Hugh Cornwell left.

Pulp had loads of line up changes, but remained brilliant.

There are so many other examples where it works and where it doesn't work. It's all about whether the identity of the band remains intact to the listener. No rules.

Dr Feelgood still tour, without a single member who was in their line up when they started!

It still is for me, his sound can be replicated and is. And besides, he’s been a right arse by all accounts and only has self to blame for his exile. If Bernie left, that would be different. NO still brilliant, pre and post Hookie.

The Stones weren't quite the Stones after Brian Jones died. Mick Taylor kept them going for a bit longer. Never the same creative force once Ronnie Wood joined. Sadly a better artist than guitar player.

Jethro Tull died with the departure of Martin Barre. Ian Anderson's subsequent vocal failure soon became academic.

Oddly The Hollies sound very good on YouTube with two originals yet no Clarke or Nash. Might go and see them at G-Live.

The Manfreds are every bit as good as Manfred Mann.

Interesting point I guess as long as at least one original member is still part of the band then it’s still going, if the said original member happens to be the singer or main song writer then it’s credibility is even stronger

It depends.

When one or more of the charismatic geniuses depart, it just doesn’t seem the same - Hookie leaving New Order, also the Stranglers scenario.

The remaining members of Joy Division, The Beatles, Nirvana all did the right thing.


Whilst The Who and The Rolling Stones definitely did the right thing in carrying on after Moon and Jones.

I suppose the quality of the ensuing new music and whether the frontman/woman remains, determines whether it works for fans.

99% agree with you but then there is AC/DC
