Anyone see that programme the other night about the construction of Palm Island in Dubai ? Bloody AMAZING project. Some arab prince is bankrolling it. They've built a vast breakwater surrounding the palmtree design, which is made of millions upon millions of tonnes of sand dredged from the sea and compacted hard so they can build on it. It'll add 120km's of asndy beaches to the resort, and will house 2,000 villas and about 40 luxcury hotels. They've been building since 2001, and its due for completion some time in 2008 (predictably, the Beckhams have already put down money on a villa there). The whole thing is visible from the MOON.

Can you imagine trying to get planning permission for that bastard in this country ? It'd never happen in a million years.

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
There was a plan for a similar development (although not so grand) out in the sea off Brighton and Hove, but just at the stage of a dream, with pretty pictures.

That would look amazing from the moon. I will have to book a spot on the next passenger shuttle.

*starts counting from copper tin*

They've even dropped a couple of fighter jets in there two years ago so people can scubdive around them - they're planning to drop a london bus down there as well.

Not exactly sustainable development is it?
The sand dredgers have to constantly "top up" the beaches, as the tides erode and carry the sand away. They're also having to do this on some areas of the mainland beaches as well, because the whole construction has totally altered how the tide washes along the coastline.

What they need is a few strategically placed GROYNES

They'll probably make them out of GOLD

i find the fact that there is this complex where only millionaires can live, along the beach from some of the poorest people in the world disgusting.

"only millionaires"?

don't think so mate, property is cheap over there. The one I'm looking at is 150 grand....although I know some of the bigger apartments are going for over a mill.

It does sound good but I'm sure the whole plan will collapse when they can't get permission for a park and ride.

Only?? That's more than the average home in the UK (the fourth richest country in the world). How many people in this country could afford to pay that for a second home? And as TID said this is in region where £150k would represent unimaginable wealth. You really are a plonker sometimes.

Still, should be fun out there when the sea levels rise.

The fact is, Dubai is HAVING to invest heavily in tourism, as its oil supplies will run dry by 2016. Thats why they're building these staggering engineering feats - without them, their entire economy would be dead in the water in 10 years time.

And after the sea-level rises, it will be its entire population that will be dead in the water.
