ok lets all hate people because they were born in the croydon area, lets try and make all the younger people hate them as well, and when a few innocent people get beaten to a pulp we can say well i didn't do it! its not my fault i just wanted a football rivalry without the nasty bits:facepalm: And i'm the idiot because i want my kids going to football without all these silly people cranking up hatred?:moo:

And why should we all reduce ourselves down to the lowest common denominator, and act in a way to try and avoid the neanderthals getting all riled up? Sorry, but I can have a rivalry with Palace, whereby I want them to lose, I want to beat them, I want to have a League position that is above them and to have enjoyed beating them twice in the season, without hating anyone! "We hate Palace" is an impersonal expression, that does not translate to me saying to any individual who supports them "I hate YOU!", not out of some form of cowardice, but simply because the individual who grew up in Croydon rather than Brighton is not the issue, it's purely my team against their team, and I desperately want mine to beat theirs, more than any other game of the season.

I have family and friends who are Palace fans, and they know I want to beat them so very VERY badly, but it's football, and nothing personal. There is no genuine, personal hate involved, nothing even close.

A very mature outlook sir! its a shame others on nsc can't take the same stance! You do realise that the way others are approaching the game could encourage the feeble minded to take this a step further! not sure nsc is the place for the anti palace garbage! One of the reasons that we had such a great rivalry is the similarities between us,support league status and comparable size idiot fringe.Lets enjoy the games between us without trying to ignite the past!:moo:

Of course, but we can't live our lives in fear of igniting the pre-historic instincts of the "feeble minded" (nice phrase, I'll steal that if you don't mind). That's the sort of approach that tries to discourage women from wearing skimpy tops and little skirts for fear of attacks, which quite franky would ruin my summer.

I understand cautious approach, but I won't be part of it, as I love the rivalry with Palace. I will be cheering and screaming for every team they play against this season, and will love every minute of us finishing above 'em. Yes, that'll include me singing various refrains of "we hate Palace", but as I say, it's football, nothing personal. My mate who is a STH at Smellhurst, will still be my mate, and we'll still chat through the season over a few beers. One of us will have the smug grin of finishing higher, and will wind the other one up mercilessly about it, but that's as far as it goes.

This!

Thinking of setting up a buddy system between bha and palace who would be intererested,it would consist of matching albion fans with palace and arranging a meet up at the home or away game, you would then show palace fan around and then take them to falmer:smile: and they would look after you up in south london! We could call it the albion ambassador network and if it worked well we could expand it to other teams, millwall, pompey and southampton.
What do ya reckon?:moo:

You can't take rivalry out of football, and nor should anyone try. That's what brings passion and excitement to games that appear meaningless to everyone outside the rivalry. Take rivalry out and you just have dull, and quiet games played out as a "spectacle" to entertain the masses, which is all very well when you have a Champions League semi-final, but when it's 2nd tier football, and we were heading towards relegation, then the boost to my season seeing us turn them over 2-0 at the Goldstone (April 1987) was immense. Some otherwise average player (Hughes) scored the second goal, and I briefly LOVED the man.

Rivalries are what keeps us going, it fires up the passions, and just because some idiots used it as an excuse for a fight, doesn't mean the rivalry themselves are wrong.

Spot on.
