So Palace fans keep saying, but here are the actual numbers:

12 Players, who made squad appearances last year who have now gone (I've added Batshuayi as his loan ended)

Cayhill - 20 appearances in 2020/21 / 27 times in the matchday squad
Clyne - 14/22
Dann - 15/30
McCarthy - 17/26
Sakho - 6/14
Townsend - 36/40
Van Aanolt -23/34
Batshuayi (loan) - 20/37
Hennessey 0/5
Henderson 0/3
Wickham 0/3
Woods 0/1

That's a total of 151 appearances and 242 squad selections out of 39 games: A maximum of 546 appearances from the first eleven plus three subs, 702 squad selections with a maximum squad size of 18 players.

These players between them made 27.65% of the total appearances.
They took up 34.47% of your total squad places.

Between them they played in just under, and were in the squad for just over, a third of your games. So at the minimum, you probably need to replace a third of your 18 man match day squad. Given injuries to Eze and Ferguson and the annual transfer request from Zaha, let's say the best scenario is that you need a minimum of eight signings, loans or promotions from the U23s to replace the contributions of this lot. The season starts three weeks tomorrow. Deadline day is 6 and a half weeks away. Many said that Fulham may have survived last year had they got their eventual squad in place much earlier.

Tick, tick, tick.

You should stick to facts..

The new season starts 3 weeks today. [emoji41]

3 weeks and 10 mins I believe.

So that gives you 11 starters a 4 subs …….

No its doesn't. We have 19 first team players. 15 of them have vast experience, others like Mateta, Guehi, Mitchell and Olise are first team players that are young and little experience of the Prem.

I'm not saying they will play, I'm saying as a last resort they could step in and take up a bench spot. It's irrelevant anyway as we will be signing 4-5 more players before deadline day so it won't come to that.

I could take a bench slot but I wouldn't put money on us staying up if I did. Please for you own good just acknowledge that next season is a challenge not a given right to challenge for Europe.

So basically benchwarmers who aren’t good enough and players you haven’t signed yet.

O'Brien, Rak-Sakyi and Omilabu, all highly regarded prospects

I saw a Palace fan tweet Omilabu is the player we thought Connolly would be. Connolly won the Premier League 2 player of the season, and Omilabu has never played a competitive senior game for Palace, so how they know that is beyond me.

Fun fact: Rak Sakyi was in the youth system at Chelsea, but wasn't offered a scholarship. He trialed with Albion and actually scored in the U-18 PL South meeting with Reading in February 2019.

Presumably we didn't offer him a deal; he moved on and trialed for Watford, and eventually earned a scholarship with Palace.

The thing about youth is you need the right manager to bring them through. Hughton couldn’t or wouldn’t. Potter had a track record at Swansea and has continued that here. Does Viera have any pedigree in bringing through young talent, because if he doesn’t he is going to have to learn bloody fast.
