This thread is not really about “Palace fans biggest fear” it’s more what was happening 10 years ago.

I want to read, palace definitely getting relegated this year, or Palace going bust again.

I always love the annual thread started in September about how palace are deffo going down this year

Clearly you’re going to struggle this year having sold your better players, failed to invest in your academy and we’re all better than you.

Why is it a disastrous release clause? Olise signed for another 4 years last summer, with an increased release clause. If we had not inserted a higher release clause, he would have been sold last summer, so we ended up with another year out of him

I agree that its what the buyer is willing to pay, and what the seller thinks a player is worth. For Wilf, even with his wages, he kept us in the premier league for a few extra seasons, which is worth a big sum of money, so we put a price on his head that no-one wanted to pay. Caciedo would still be at Brighton if the £115 million had not been bid, but would he have been happy?

No, Liverpool had already bid £111m which we accepted, then Chelsea came in.

If and it’s a huge if…I would think he would be more of a 10 minutes at the end of a game palace are chasing impact type player. He is only 31 so has a couple of years in front of him.

Must also be remembered he runs a children’s charity in south London and his family church which I believe he is involved in is also in south London, plus Stormzy and Wilf have heavily invested into AFC Croydon in the Isthmian league, so there are other factors to bear in mind.

All good points, Loz. As has been said on this forum many times, most Albion fans have a begrudging respect for him. He is clearly a good person. But obviously a sworn enemy on the park who will always attract our vitriol, especially when he dives and whinges. The other 8% of his game is decent though…

Palace won’t be going down with Glasner as coach.
What will be the longer term challenge is using the money from the sales of Olise, Guehi and potentially Eze in a constructive way. Appreciate that some of this work has been done already. The one thing that does ‘unite us’ is the irritation of building a really strong team and then losing key players to the top teams in Europe.
We seem to be using profit from the sale of Caicedo and others last summer in this window.

I'm hoping they do well at the beginning of the season, Chelsea will be all over Glasner if Marseca stinks Stamford Bridge out. I'd like to see how they handle being rinsed, mid-season, by one of the big boys.

All good points, Loz. As has been said on this forum many times, most Albion fans have a begrudging respect for him. He is clearly a good person. But obviously a sworn enemy on the park who will always attract our vitriol, especially when he dives and whinges. The other 8% of his game is decent though…

I like the fact that that Zaha is fully invested in the BHA-Palace rivalry. I'm wondering how long players on either side will care - maybe once Dunk and Solly are gone, it'll be difficult for our team to "get" it. The likes of Hinshelwood will understand (esp with the family connections), but who knows? And on the Palace side is there anyone (apart from Wilf) who can continue the on-field banter?!

I can't see it happening. I'm sure he wants out of Turkey - he has won a league title but doesn't seem to be enjoying his football there - but I'm not convinced it works for either party. I would hate to see him playing for another Premier League team, but I think it would be a backwards step for us unless he came back as a rotation option. I think an arrangement like that would hurt his pride.

I think what's more likely is that his total donkey of an agent (his brother) is trying to flush out some interest by making an easy link in the papers.

This certainly concerns me - as does the prospect of Kompany failing to hit the ground running at Bayern. They've wanted Glasner before and I'm sure they will again...

He's decent, undoubtedly, but all new progressive managers start well in the Premier League.
Premier league analysts already have some data on Glasner and they will be better prepared to face Palace this season.

Remember all the praise RDZ was getting during that first 6 months?
The praise Glasner has been getting, has primarily been around getting good players to play well.

Both Glasner and De Zerbi have reputations for being problematic when they don't feel they are being backed.

Palace may end up having a bumpy ride in the upcoming season.

Question.

Is this the most closely matched with gone into a season with Palace with in anyone's memory?

The play off season, we did finish close, but in terms of bookies / pundits expectations etc, they can't separate us by more than a couple of places this season

Last season, we were close, but I don't think they were fancied to get close to us

It should make for some ferocious derbies and some delicious moments when either of us let slip a late win to allow the other to overtake

And do you think we'll actually be close, or do you think one of us will overachieve or underachieve expectations. You don't have to say who, I know you're all biased on this thread

Unless he's prepared to take a huge pay cut, I'm not sure any other PL team would be interested. His (previous) Palace-level salary is way too high for anyone realistic to want to pay for a squad player.

Another return to Palace does seem the best fit.

Yes and no. He certainly managed to further raise the level of the already excellent Eze & Olise, but his best work was done with the likes of Mateta, Mitchell, Clyne etc. who were totally reinvigorated under Glasner.

Any Palace fan would have personally driven Mateta back to a Bundesliga training ground if you'd asked us a year ago - yet after a few months of Glasnerball he seems like a different player entirely and was one of the most lethal 9's in the division. Clyne was an ageing fullback, being given a torrid time by wingers up and down the country. Glasner moves him to right centre half in a back three and suddenly he's doing a passable impression of Fabio Cannavaro.

It remains to be seen, of course, whether Glasner can maintain the momentum he built up towards the end of the season. We can only judge him based on what we've seen so far though, and what we've seen has been outstanding. There's no point being pessimistic about what 'might' happen - I'm sure there'll be plenty of time for disappointments down the road.

Probably not. But Boehly decided he wanted to take on Uncle Tony at poker.......with the inevitable result.

You could say that Boehly got mugged off - as he did with Potter and his acolytes.

I agree. The 3 teams coming up will struggle - the better of the 3 (Leicester) will probably have a points deduction to cope with as well.

However, there always seems to be a surprise team in the relegation mix up - I'm hoping its Brentford and not us !

Spoke to a Palace fan acquaintance last night and seems they are more confident than at anytime during their Premier League stint. They also think they already have their Guehi replacement recruited with a lad from Real Betis and he was quite excited about the money they are making and that they seem to be following our approach to a certain extent.
