Chelsea after recent dealings, obvs

older Brighton fans would perhaps say Portsmouth but ultimately their main rivalry is with Southampton of course. In my lifetime we've only been in the same league as them a few times so I can't say I'm that fussed about them. Only bugbear was growing up with Meridian/South Today and them and Southampton getting all the attention

certainly not Crawley as we've never been in the same division as them

I wouldn't call Chelsea a real rival. Just a team we, and everyone outside their supporter base, likes to see lose.

Without the Palace indoctrination, I always considered Portsmouth as the team I wanted to lose to least. In the original football fans survey done years ago Portsmouth and ourselves had each other down as second rivals.

The Palace thing is a strange one as they don't bother me. I don't look for their results much except hoping they are not above us.

Right now it's Chelsea I take enjoyment in seeing lose and Portsmouth's annual bid to avoid promotion is back on track.

The teams who I probably consider full rivals changes year on year. It's basically those who are the biggest threat in the table.

Ultimately, all rivalries have no substance in their apparent hate. It's just humans wanting a cause to fight over.

I'm not sure the term 'rival' really works for us anyway, being so geographically distant from others - it's not like we have a red half of the city. There are historical reasons to dislike certain clubs more than others.

I never really got wrapped up in the whole rivalry thing.
My problem is that NSC is pretty much the only social media platform I use and Tw@ts like Dougie and SE20 kind of spoil it here for me with their trolling with impunity. The other guys here take the rough with the smooth and can be funny to read.
I suppose it's really time to use the block thread facility as blocking users just tempts me back into looking at times.

This is sort of where I am but in reverse, only living in Sussex I do look out for Brighton / Crawley/ Lewis / Whitehawk/ B hill and East Grinstead results and enjoy it when Three Bridges lose.

But I will talk football to most people apart from Sussex based Chelsea/ Man unt and city and Liverpool fans…I look at them and wonder what made them wake up in their cosy Sussex home and say “ I now support Liverpool” I can’t get it in my head ?

I remember about 20 years ago, the fanzine One More Point (or it might have been Eagle Eye) had a cover advertising for new rivals as we had not had the pleasure of playing you for several years and you seemed to be on a downward spiral. I am sure at the current rate of progress, you may end up putting out a similar advert for new rivals. Perhaps we should draw lots to see who should ask Crawley to be rivals...

Just out of curiosity, if not Palace, who would Brighton consider as their rivals?

To be honest I guess it should be Southampton or Portsmouth, Crawley haven't really been near us and you guys were there by default due mainly to Venables & Mullery. I'd actually say we don't have rival really, I enjoy our friendly rivalry but can't abide the bile and hatred at the fixture, we should be above that.

I'd say it's probably Marseille now

TCFs as I call them. Third Class Fans. I struggle to recognise anyone's support for these clubs as real. And the phrase 'us' irks me.

The Palace rivalry is pantomime to me. Crystal Palace are a 'proper' football club with genuine fans. So as much as I wouldn't want to lose to them, and on the day the match does have an edge that others don't, If Palace disappeared I would be sad. If Chelsea fell through the leagues I would take great delight- as indeed would most. But Chelsea aren't our rivals and will never be. Thankfully. They're our cash cow.

Yes, they could beat us, but I’m not about to sit politely in the corner just in case.

And if they do, we'll still be above them and better than them. When we beat City in the league, and they won the league, we were hardly able to gloat. Position in the table trumps a one off game.

there's a few reasons really. Firstly, it's important to acknowledge just how in the doldrums Brighton were in the 90's and 00's. I was at school for most of this period in Brighton and there really was only a handful of Brighton fans in my year. It wasn't Chelsea or City though it was very much Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool. When United won the treble my school was hell on earth, I was absolutely gutted when they won that. This was in the late Goldstone/Gillingham and Withdean days so it's easy to see why kids were put off. It was much more attractive to watch football on TV than go to watch Brighton at some absolute dive for many and even going to a premier league game in London was probably more attractive.

A lot of those kids that took the piss out of us for supporting Brighton can now be seen at the Amex of course.

Thankfully in the later Withdean years, the club put a lot of effort into getting kids to go to Withdean and gave out a lot of free tickets to primary schools amongst other things. As soon as the Amex opened and particularly after promotion to the Premier League was things changed drastically but we essentially lost a generation of fans.

Secondly, Sussex and in particular Brighton does have quite a transient population and a lot of people from London move down here. Naturally they are unlikely to support Brighton so you do get a lot of supporters of London clubs down here for that reason and that is generational so even if a kid is born down here, they may support, say, Arsenal because their dad does.

Assuming palace's current malaise, despite them actually being in the position they've made their own over the last 10 years, is in direct contrast to ours.

I'm guessing 5 goals away from home, a teenager on the score sheet and into the 5th round of the cup piles even more pressure on Roy and parish.
