British politics is in an appalling state. It’s as if someone went to the politician reject shop and brought the whole bloody lot, gave them a card with the word ‘Brexit’ on it and told them to get on with it.
The one thing for certain is that not one of them has the interest of the country at heart. They’re self-interested and self-promoting with delusions of grandeur. The country could be in ruins but as long as Boris was prime minister he couldn’t give a shit. Similar story for gove, Rees ****ing Mogg and Corbyn. The only difference between Corbyn and the rest is that he wants some socialist utopia (even if it means taking the country apart bit by bit) whereas the others are in it for themselves.

None are fit to govern but then again I’m hard pressed to think of anyone who could make a reasonable stab at prime minister.

Neil’s is an absolute ****. I would piss on him if he was on fire but only to slow down the burning process. Jones need to engage brain before gobbing off but is well on they way to joining the rest of these ********s. I doubt that he even knows the other side of the argument.

They didn’t sell out to the tories ...... it was worse .... Clegg whored the Lib Dem’s to the tories. however the Tories and labour are screwed and as the Lib Dem’s need building from the ground up there is a chance that it would work. TBH, anyone that covers the middle ground will do.

Tend to agree. Interestingly the whole Brexit sh*t show has brought the progressives from all parties together in Westminster into something akin to a cult. They tend to be serious politicians too, rather than the crooks, chancers and bigoted ideologists from the ends of both spectrums.

and that was their first bit of power nationally for a centuary. clearly Liberals where they stand are not the answer that anyone is look for.

someone earlier said some of labour, some of tories need to group together. misses that core foundations of the parties are incompatible, the outcomes centre left and right want are much the same, but how to achieve them is not, and if you got selected for one you are signed up to those principles. there needs to be a fundamentally new party, but dont see how it will form organically. parties need an army of activists, and very difficult to get people motivated to center ground by definition.

Owen Jones is clever but not wise. He ought to realise that he comes across as everything that many people who might otherwise vote Labour despise - mouthy, full of himself and utterly convinced that his is the only true path.

I kinda agree with that. Maybe it's because I'm at completely the other end of the spectrum, but I worry about people who have so much hatred, anger and venom towards one particular party, group or point of view. Brexit – maybe understandably – is everywhere you look, which is fine because it's a huge deal – or no deal – for the country. But the way some people carry themselves when engaging in debate about it goes way beyond being 'passionate' about it. It's either points scoring for their side, personal attacks on opponents, which often makes them blinkered to taking on any other point of view, or looking at the situation from the other person's perspective. I look at some people's social media profiles and they are FILLED with shared posts about, let's be honest, hatred or belittling of another person or group's point of view. It's appalling behaviour, really and I can't see any time in the future that it's going to get better.

And that's just one example. Football fans are horrible to each other, people lose their shite about vegan sausage rolls and online newspaper comments sections have people foaming at the mouth about fictional characters in TV programmes! All of these reactions are often made without finding out the full story or the reasons behind the story – people just jump on the bandwagon and follow the popular narrative. I think, sadly, a lot of it is done in the name of entertainment and attention-seeking. Trumpo and Piers Moron are two good examples of that, but those two last night (from the clip I saw on Twatter) and many other MPs are becoming just as bad. Part of the reason the country is in this mess – and it IS a mess, whichever way you look at it – is because people forgot how to communicate and take a step back from the hole they are in and look at the situation.

Great post. The country does indeed feel very divided. Not a healthy situation, and the casual throw away abuse that's rife on social media platforms just exacerbates this

Re the Spectator, I can't think of any other "cesspit, fascist-type" publications that includes regular contributions from such as Nick Cohen, Alex Massie and Matthew Parris.

This is an absurd comment he has written a series of well researched, cogent books, and videos about politics in the UK today where he discusses the views and politics of people with whom he disagrees, for excample "The Establishment", and "Chavs" . He of course comes to his own conclusions from a socialist perspective but to describe him as childlike and pseudo intellectual (whatever that means) is ridiculous.

In his writing he has all the time in the world, with editors, to get it right.

In debates with anyone who opposes or challenges his view, he resorts to an interrrupting, rude, unlistening 17 year old style. So bitterly entrenched in his narrow view of the world, he resorts to confrontation and defensiveness. One day, he’ll grow up, concede points, accept failings in his imperfect marxist warriors, genuinely listen, whilst passionately pushing forward his viewpoint.
