Looking at the BBC premier league table, we're third, behind only Arsenal and Aston Villa. European football beckons.
Final finishing position, was it 13th in the old 1st division, under Mike Bailey?
And the supporters grumbled about the hughtonesque style of play so we sacked the manager and brought in flair (er, Jimmy Melia)

One of the worst decisions ever, although I always thought that the decision taken by Bamber was due to the lower crowds at the Goldstone, but not taking into account that crowds were reducing at every club at the time.
Mr Paul Bamber?

Yes that was it - 13th. From memory the football was very defensive and unattractive. Attendance figures fell - around 13k for Middlesbrough at home. People like to watch a winning team, almost regardless of the division.
