Final finishing position, was it 13th in the old 1st division, under Mike Bailey?

And the supporters grumbled about the hughtonesque style of play so we sacked the manager and brought in flair (er, Jimmy Melia)

One of the worst decisions ever, although I always thought that the decision taken by Bamber was due to the lower crowds at the Goldstone, but not taking into account that crowds were reducing at every club at the time.

Looking at the BBC premier league table, we're third, behind only Arsenal and Aston Villa. European football beckons.

Moved up a place thanks to B'Muff getting relegated :)

I remember going to Anfield in 82 and beating them in the league 1-0.
I always thought football was a results based business but sacking Mike Bailey went against the grain.
Our fans at times bemuse me.
Mike took us to our highest ever finish but fan power put paid to that.
We classed Johnny Crumplin as a football genius, but Mike Bailey deserved so much more.

Yes that was it - 13th. From memory the football was very defensive and unattractive. Attendance figures fell - around 13k for Middlesbrough at home. People like to watch a winning team, almost regardless of the division.

We were struggling under Bailey the following season if I remember though.

Didn’t deserve the bullet though.

Isn't that a bit contradictory? We were a winning team, and reached our highest position because of that surely? I thought it was the dullness of the football that was cited as the issue, not the fact that we weren't winning enough. Sounds really as though entertaining not winning is the most important?
