I've had my Dell laptop for over 4 years now, never a hint of trouble.
Well, other than the fact I have no 'M' key, as the bird chewed it off and broke the little plastic rests that go round the rubber membrane bit. But thats not really Dells fault. I'd have no qualms about ordering another lappy from them, and probably will do in the next year or so.

I have much more of a problem with PC World. The salesmen in there rely upon a lack of knowledge and attempt to sell you all manner of things that you don't want or need. Our IT manager went into one recently feigning a lack of knowledge, to see what they offered him, and it was completely unsuitable for purpose. I would never even contemplating buying a PC in there; if you know what you want it's easier to do it online from other sources, and if you don't they will give you something completely unsuitable. No thanks.
.

Totally agree. I've gone in there feigning lack of knowledge too and am staggered by the drivel they come out with. I would never ever buy a PC from PC World

As for Dell, their success is down to good marketing and prey on the target consumer's lack of knowledge. Their products are built with cheap components on a non standard chassis. This makes upgrading difficult and more expensive as you would have to buy their parts.

Many corporates buy Dell because they are cheap, which accounts for most of the numbers in units sold and not the home user. Out of 10 bought 3 are usually dead on arrival, and another 2 or 3 will have some component failure within the first year of use (in my experience).

no main brand uses a "standard" chassis so i really dont know what that matters, they still all use the same interfaces though. but who really upgrades a PC beyond a harddrive? really? go more than 3 years and the chips, memory, HD connectors, PSU... just about everything changes and you have to do a complete new build anyway.

most corporates buy del because they are fairly cheap, standard and reliable. if they weren't they wouldnt buy them... usually about 10% will have a fault in a couple of years, whcih is usually the HD which says more about that component than anything else*. Laptops, with the treatment they get, are less reliable, but its funny how those that never leave the office never go wrong and those owned by the loudest sales people do the most...

* there was a period after the Pentium 4 first came out when they were very unreliable, if you look at the original P4 optiplex and others and those about 3-4 months later you concluded they screwed up the design: they didnt have enough ventilation and got too hot. But dell replaced every single failed CPU/systemboard from that period where i was, and eventually replaced a dozen left, so no biggie.

Perhaps you should keep your wife away from your laptop then?

They used to be like that I agree but these days they tend to realise that their customers are a lot more savvy. I popped in to my local PC World a couple of times recently and on one occasion I was after a change of hardware thanks to a fault I found. they not only offered a full refund without argument but offered me two other solutions (after I has asked them) and they favoured the cheaper alternative. I took their advice and I am happy to say it worked perfectly.

However if I was to want to but a new PC it would be a Dell as it would be cheaper.

Cheers all. To be honest, I tend to use PC World as a guide, get the info I want from them and then order online.

Will check out Dell now - cheers

I don't know who the hell you are but to come on this board and within six posts call someone a liar suggests that you have deep-seated problems

For your information, I'm a computer journalist who handles a variety of different machines. As I said, I've had no problems with Dell neither at work nor at home. And do you really think it's credible that corporates would buy heavily from a company if, as you claim, 50 or 60 percent of their products don't work or develop faults? There's no way that a company would get repeat business with that level of quality control.

I don't think Dell is perfect: their policy on Linux is crap and their customer support is terrible - I only had dealings with them once when I'd lost a laptop power cord but that was enough to realise why the company had such a poor reputation. But as i said, they make solid, reliable, well-priced machines so are well worth considering.

1st - I am a Brighton & Hove Albion fan and have been for many years, I was at the Southend game last Saturday which was a disappointing game but at least the weather was nice. I may have made only six posts but we all have to start somewhere.

2nd - Where does it say I called you a liar? I said "I find that very hard to believe" [that] the corporates you have worked with have never had a problem with Dell hardware.

3rd - My experience with corporate buyers is they have no idea what they're buying and rely on yet another sales-rep, who is more interested in his/her commission than suggesting what is best for the customer.

It was never my intention to ruffle any feathers but this has clearly happened so I apologise, but my i stand by my opinion which is not ignorant nor ill-informed.

I don't think i have deep-seated problems but perhaps a psycologist may be reading this and would like to offer an analysis.

Gwylan is as much entitled to his opinion as you are however it's your judgement here that's in question. He, like me and plenty of others, have given a very unbiased opinion about Dell, it's based on experience. I know tey are not the very best that money can buy but because of their market share they offer a very good compromise especially if you are not an expert which is the point we have been trying to make.

If you want to question my judgement that’s fine, but you’re suggesting my opinion is not based on experience.
