 Transfermarkt.

You’re wrong.

You said we don’t have a left back or indeed a full back in the squad. I said we had Karbownik who has played both right back and at left back multiple times in his short career . If that doesn’t count - then fair enough.

It’s been widely acknowledged that he’s more of RWB, or RM than defender, so again, we still don’t have a specialist full back in the squad. If that’s by Potter’s design then fair enough, but for a mere mortal looking in from the outside it seems we’re very short. The fact we’ve been heavily linked to a LB and RB suggests the club share these concerns.

Dan Ashworth - "Michal is another exciting young player, who we are pleased to welcome to the club. He is flexible in terms of position; he can play on the right or left side, at full-back or wing-back, and in midfield."

Does this mean he's not a full back or a "specialist" FB - cos he can play elsewhere. ? Ha ! Ok. Fair enough.

Of course Agree with the rest. He's young and we need strengthening in that area - and club are looking. He's only 20 and has so far played er, once.

Dan Burn can play LB, but he’s a CB.
Ben White could play RWB, CDM but he’s a CB.
Veltman can play RB, RWB but he’s a CB.
Covering a position certainly doesn’t make it a natural role for a player.

Yes. I get it. Not sure Potter frets too much about it when setting the team up but yep - Karbo can't be called a full back!

Personally, I don't think either Burn or Veltman are Premier League centre backs. They're both better at full back in my opinion - based on what I've seen from them in various positions.

It's reminiscent of Leeds fans creaming themselves over Ben White in his first game for them. Bookmark that Oatcake thread for a 9 months' time when Stoke fans are telling the world that the loan season at their club turned Ostigard into the player he is.

He must have done. Reading this thread yesterday it sounded like he had one year left and was then sent on loan for that whole year, which simply didn't make any sense!

Maybe wrong but think we had an option of an extra year which we took up, and now followed it with one more.

Ooh, big call. I think Veltman is a fine player, but we haven’t really seen too much of him at centre back, have we? He’s been our modern day Barry Venison.

Ostigard is a strange one. I've never seen him play but all reports make him sound like a potterball-able version of Shane Duffy. What's not to like? Yet here he is for the second season in a row off on loan to the championship.

What part of his game needs improving?

I think he's a fine player too and I think right of a three, or left of a three, he's more than capable. It seems to me that we're switching to a back four this season and he is a right back in that system for me. I'm not criticising him at all, he'd not let us down at centre back in a pair but I don't think that's his strength and I wouldn't be comfortable playing him there longer term. I would rather Duffy played in a two, especially with Veltman at right back.

I think it's just age isn't it.?
21 I believe, probably think a year of playing constantly is more valuable at this stage than a year bench-warming, particularly as Duffy is unlikely to attract many offers this year.

I don't know. Maybe.

We had seven defenders last year and they all played a fair bit. If he was considered good enough he'd be in line for a fair amount of game time too I'd imagine. Particularly with Veltman being the cover for Lamptey.

Instead he's shipped out and our seventh defender is Duffy, who I love but, well, he's not best suited to Potter's style of play. So with Ostigard being shipped out on loan it suggests he's bellow Duffy, a player deemed not good enough last year, in the pecking order.

Unless another defender is in the pipeline.

Well, as far as I know, Roberts, the forgotten (and apparantly injured) van Hecke, and the even more forgotten Tudor Baluta are still at the club. Not saying they're in line for a regular PL slot - but you never know!

FWIW, I think Roberts is young enough to have a season here, in the U23s and a few games in the cups, and maybe a bit of benchwarming before a Championship loan next season. I think the club might want van Hecke to go on loan in England (or Scotland) to gain some experience of football in Britain. Baluta? I honestly haven't a clue!

Haydon Roberts is clearly a fan of The Gym in Hove. He was putting in quite a shift there last night - and I say that praisingly. I'm sure he's doing the training work and to me it suggests a good attitude to then be in the gym of an evening working on his upper body strength. He's only a very slight guy so maybe he's been told/decided to bulk up.

Still only 19 though - can't see him in the team this season. Maybe in an 'easy' cup tie. Maybe.
